East Belfast Ulster Unionist MLA Michael Copeland said he was disappointed at Minister Hanson’s refusal to meet with two constituents who would be dramatically and adversely affected by changes to the rating system.
Mr Copeland said that these two cases were not extreme cases but that thousands of others across Northern Ireland would be in a similar situation therefore Mr Hanson’s assertion that he could not meet individual constituents without agreeing to them all did not stand up.
East Belfast MLA Michael Copeland said that the government rationale for cutting salaries and office cost allowances on November 24th was based on the premise that MLAs were not performing their elected legislative functions.

I consider it improper in the extreme that, having reached Parliament on their votes, he should spend his time there lining his pocket by serving interests of which they may know nothing and which may even be contrary to their own.
This is a sharp contrast to the voluntary guidelines in Parliament.
Many constituents will be shocked to discover that their elected rep-resentative is working for and being paid thousands of pounds by companies of which they may never have heard.

The Government’s policy on devolution is based upon the principle that the nations of the UK have their own history and clear national identity, and devolution arrangements need to reflect this.
In addition, as the population of England accounts for 84% of the UK population, this would mean that an English Parliament would only be slightly smaller than the current UK Parliament.
Finally, as an English constituency and one that would be swallowed up by a meaningless region that it has no links to, I think voting for a non-regional, pro-English party would be in its best interests.

An English Parliament, with the same powers as the Scottish Parliament, and running alongside the existing UK Parliament would lead to the creation of two parliaments and governments within one.
This would mean that a UK Government, elected on a UK mandate, might find itself unable to deliver key policies on which it had been elected.
The polls I have seen indicate that if there is not already majority support for an English Parliament, it is only because the figures involved are, as you suggest, the result of dishonest interpretation of the responses to OTHER questions.

If Labour truly believes that this is the proper future for the people of Scotland and Wales, their logic must mean the same for England.
An English parliament, on the same basis as the Scottish one, will be the minimum that the English people are likely to be satisfied with.
