The Copeland Islands is a group of islands in the north Irish Sea, north of Donaghadee, County Down, Northern Ireland consisting of Lighthouse, Mew and Copeland Island.
The centre of the island is occupied by semi-improved wet grassland with frequent areas of marsh.
The rabbit populations on the islands play an important role in the breeding success of the Manx Shearwater as the latter mainly nest in the rabbit burrows that honeycomb the islands.

These three islands of Mew, Lighthouse and Copeland Island were always a hazard to shipping and there are records of braziers and early lighthouses from the seventeenth century erected to reduce the incidence of such disasters.
Copeland Island itself, or the “Big Isle” as it was usually called locally, had as many as one hundred people, usually named Clegg or Emerson, living and farming on it.
The island has its own churchyard in an ancient quarry, but curiously a number of those interred there are mainlanders with some romantic attachment to the islands, whilst many of the headstones in Donaghadee churchyard are dedicated to islanders who preferred to be buried in that town.

COPELAND ISLANDS, a cluster of three islands, situated at the south entrance of Belfast Lough, and in that part of the parish of BANGOR which is in the barony of ARDES, county of DOWN, and province of ULSTER, called respectively Copeland, Lighthouse, and Mew islands.
Copeland island, the largest of the three, called also Big island and Neddrum, is 2 miles (N.N.E) from Donaghadee, and about one mile from the mainland; it comprises about 200 acres, and contains 15 houses; near a small inlet, called Chapel bay, are the ruins of a church, with a burial ground.
Off this island the Enterprise, of Liverpool, a homeward-bound vessel from the coast of Guinea, was totally wrecked in 1801; she is said to have had on board £40,000 in dollars, which, with all her cargo, lay buried in the sea till 1833, when Mr.

Paddling north from Savary to the Copeland Islands was the only section of the trip where wind had to be counted into course calculations but even this was a minor consideration.
The Copeland Islands are a designated marine park and are made up of three main islands and at least six smaller ones (this depends on definition and chart scale) and stretch over an area of about 2 ½ by ½ miles bordering Thulin Passage.

We left Savary at about 10:00 am and crossed directly to the nearest point of the Copeland chain (about 3 nautical miles of open water.) From there we paddled along the western side of the southernmost island and passed through the channel separating it from its neighbour.
We continued along the east side of the islands but decided to turn for Lund half way up the chain as the wind was beginning to blow up and the waves were growing rapidly.
The crossing to the Copelands from Savary was very choppy, though the waves were not yet breaking.

The Copeland islands off Donaghadee are abundant in wildlife and tide races.
However, a trip to these islands needs to involve careful tidal planning as they are notorious for catching paddlers out.
Tides run very hard of the North West point of Copeland Island and off the South East side of Mew Island with races and turbulent water forming.
