  Tychonian system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tychonian system was an effort by Tycho Brahe to create a model of the solar system which would combine what he saw as the mathematical benefits of the Copernican system with the philosophical and "physical" benefits of the Ptolemaic system.
It can be shown through a geometric argument that the motions of the planets and the sun relative to the Earth in the Tychonian system are equivalent to the motions in the Copernican system, and the Tychonian system has the advantage of not predicting stellar parallax, which was not observable until the 19th century.
Ultimately the Tychonian system was rejected along with the Copernican system by the observations of Brahe himself, which were used by Johannes Kepler to demonstrate that the orbits of the planets are ellipses and not circles.

It was overthrown by the Copernican revolution after Galileo Galilei and Copernicus discovered that the planets orbited the sun.
Unlike earlier systems (such as 'the stars move because that is the will of the gods', or the model of concentric spheres), the Ptolemaic model explained all phenomena in the sky, while holding to Plato's dictum which states that all motions in the heavens can be explained with uniform, circular motion, and obeying Aristotelian physics.
Though there were observations made (primarily by Galileo) which called into question some of the tenets of the Ptolemaic system (such as the fact that Jupiter also has moons), it was not until the discovery of the phases of Venus by Galileo in 1610 that the Ptolemaic system became untenable in any form.

To account for apparent anomalies to this view, such as the retrograde motion observed in many planets, a system of epicycles was used, by which a planet rotated on a small axis while also rotating on a larger axis around the Earth.
From publication until about 1700, few astronomers were convinced by the Copernican system, though the book was relatively widely circulated (around 500 copies are known to still exist, which is a large number by the scientific standards of the time).
Copernicanism, however, also opened a way to immanence, the view that a divine force, or a divine being, pervades all things that exist — a view that has since been developed further in modern philosophy.

Copernicus' model does provide explanations a few phenomena that are, in Ptolemy's system, merely arbitrary features of the world: the proximity of Venus and Mercury to the Sun, the retrograde motions of many of the planets, and the correlation of the planets' proximity to the Sun with their distance from the Earth.
The Copernican theory offers a simple rationale for this: when the superior planets are proximate to the Sun, they are on the opposite side of the Sun from the Earth; when they are in opposition, they are on the same side of the Sun as the Earth.
Similarly, just as the center of the planets' orbits in the Ptolemaic system is not the Earth but a point slightly distant from the Earth, the center of the world in Copernicus' model is not the Sun, but the center of the Earth's orbit, from which the Sun is slightly distant.

Compared to the Ptolemaic system of epicycles, eccentrics and equants that are required to account for the retrogressive motions of the planets, the Copernican system might be thought to be far simpler, and Copernicus when he began his project may have envisaged something rather simpler than what he ended up with.

In fact it was Bruno's advocacy of the Copernican system that produced one of the strongest reactions by the Church: Bruno advocated not only the heliocentric model, but denied that objects posses a natural motion, denied the existence of a center of the universe, denying even the Sun of a privileged place in the cosmos.

The Copernican system has a more natural explanation of the retrograde motion, the correllation between retrograde motion and brightness, and for the fact that Mercury and Venus always appear close to the sun.
The Copernican system did not greatly improve upon the Ptolemaic system in terms of explanation or prediction.
He devised a system that adopted most of the advantages of the Copernican system while maintaining the earth at the center of the universe.
