County Durham is a county in north-east England, with an area of 223,260 hectares (about 558,000 acres or 870 square miles) and an estimated population (November 2002) of 486,000.
The east of the county between Ryhope[?], Sunderland[?] and Seaton Carew[?], Hartlepool[?] is the coastline of the North Sea.
Historically, County Durham was roughly bounded by the watershed of the Pennines in the west, the River Tees in the south, the North Sea in the east and the River Tyne/River Derwent in the north.

The reason it is called Durham instead is that the Prince-Bishops of Durham historically exercised power in regions outside the county as well, so the inner part was named County Durham as opposed to the rest of the estate of Durham.

In 1676 a proclamation was issued by the Protestant malcontents denouncing the government of the Catholic Proprietary, demanding its extinction, and the appointment of a royal governor.
In the absence of reliable statistics it is difficult to ascertain the growth of the population in the colony during the period elapsing from 1634 to 1690; according to the estimate already given, in 1671, it was 20,000.

The weather station began in Copley village in 1995, it is on reasonably flat land set in a hillside facing south and at an altitude of 830ft (253m).
Copley lies on the eastern slopes of the Pennines 30 miles from the North Sea but can come under its influence on many occasions.
The prevalent wind is SW which puts Copley in a rain shadow area with shelter from the high hills to the west.
