I am a researcher for hire for the Copper Country area, which is located way up north in the middle of the thumb of the Upper Pennisula in Michigan.
This portion of the UP is called the Copper Country (or Keweenaw Pennisula) because of the huge copper mining industries that once thrived in this small, forgotten region of the world.
I was raised in Houghton, in the heart of the Copper Country, and lived in the UP all my life.

HOUGHTON -- The Copper Country Trail corridor, which includes the Houghton area and the entire Keweenaw Peninsula north of the Portage Lift Bridge, received National Scenic Byway designation on Thursday, Sept. 22, making the area eligible for federal funds to improve the quality of visitors' experiences.
