Copperbelt Province - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Copperbelt is a province of Zambia which is very rich in mineral deposits.
It was the backbone of the Northern Rhodesian economy during British colonial rule, but its economic importance was severely damaged by a crash in global copper prices in 1973 and the nationalization of the copper mines by the government of Kenneth Kaunda.
The Copperbelt region of Zambia and Congo D.R. is a 500 million year old mountain chain, the Lufilian Arc, which formed when two large pieces of continental crust, the Kalahari Craton and the Congo craton, collided.

Brian Siegel, "Water Spirits and Mermaids: The Copperbelt Case"
It suggests that the image of the mermaid is an example of diffusion, or cultural borrowing, and that this shadowy lake spirit only assumed the guise of a European-looking mermaid in the 20th century.
There are two different water beings in the folklore of the Lamba-speaking peoples of the Copperbelt and Shaba Provinces: the female lake spirit, called chitapo or nakamwale; and the great river snake, variously known as the funkwe, nsanguni, or the Solomoni snake.
But Lakes Kashiba, Namulolobwe, and Nakamwale of the Copperbelt and Shaba Provinces are home to a different sort of spirit, a shadowy female spirit who lures people to their death, and who was in some way linked to the disposal of anomalous, ill-omened children.

Cu-Co mineralization in the Zambian Copperbelt is concentrated in "ore shale" units of the Proterozoic Lower Roan Group lying above a variable thickness of metaconglomerate and arkosic metasandstone.
Petrographic examination of samples from a number of mines throughout the Zambian Copperbelt indicates that the "ore shales" comprise siltstones and minor shales which now consist of quartz-muscovite-biotite-(calcite, dolomite)-(feldspar)-(scapolite) phyllites to schists.
The Zambian Copperbelt shows a distinct zonation of metamorphic grade varying from lowest greenschist in the north and northeast (Mufulira and Konkola areas), to middle greenschist (central Copperbelt mines: Nchanga, Chambishi, Nkana), to amphibolite (Luanshya).
