In Southern Province ox-cultivation during the 1997/98 season was sharply curtailed due to massive and widespread losses of cattle, including work-oxen, caused by "corridor" disease (a form of thileriosis).
In the northern provinces (Copperbelt, Luapula, Northern, North-Western), area planted to maize was reduced due to a combination of excessive rains, floods and, to a less extent, a shift from maize to other crops.
In Southern Province, the area harvested is estimated at 50 percent of the already reduced planted area, as a result of the near-drought conditions.

The records available with the Department of Fisheries and the ICARA show that by the end of 1988 there were in the Province 1 418 farmers who between them had 2 625 ponds with a combined surface area of 127 hectares.
It was agreed furthermore that a target of 130 farmers, about 10% of those having ponds in the province, would provide a realistic picture of the condition of practising and former farmers, and that this number of interviews could be accomplished.
