The Zodiac also typifies most big walls in that to climb it you must use a pulley and ascenders to haul your bags, the belays are mostly hanging, and bivies may or may not have ledges, thus requiring that you take portaledges.
Copperheads, like regular nuts, come in multiple sizes, the smallest being as big around as a lollipop stem; the largest are about the size of a child's finger (figure 4 image).
Perhaps the single greatest advance in big-wall climbing was the invention of the portaledge, essentially a folding cot with a tent-like rainfly.

 Copperhead (climbing)
In rock climbing, a copperhead is a small nut made of a soft metal, originally copper or brass, now usually aluminium.
Copperheads are placed in the smallest cracks and seams where their malleability means that they can conform to the rock and grip better: often they need to be hammered into place.
Their small size and low strength makes them among the poorest kinds of protection ; their main use is in aid climbing where a placement that will just support the weight of the climber can be used to make progress, even though it would be useless in a fall.

At one point, the copperhead that I just placed shifted, and I thought it would be a matter of minutes before it blew away, so I hastily used a cheat stick to reach the next fixed piece.
This was a very wrong move: the cable of that piece (a small copperhead) broke a couple of minutes after I clipped it, and to my amazement, my copperhead hold the 30 foot, head first, fall.
Although she was climbing twice as slowly as I did, Ky-Van did also a good job at leading.

His opinion was that climbing dowels, rivets, bolts, etc. were all comparable in their mindlessness and detachment from the rock.
Route is plenty heads up climbing with or without a bolt there, just makes it safer (and more in line with the character of the route when the piece was orginally set as new and bomber).

Another approach would be to climb up various routes and leave food and water stashes, but this would have required "preparing" the route in advance which was more contrived than resupplying between pushes.
On the wall the climbing moved fast and painlessly but as soon we touched the ground the momentum was lost and had to be regained with the start of each push.
As temperatures climbed into the 100's we couldn't ignore the other climbers who had bailed off the El Cap and now lay under the shade of trees on the banks of the Merced River.

MCofS; (Draft) Guidance for Good Practice in Winter Climbing in Scotland
If a potential new rock climb is so vegetated and lichenous that it takes a major effort to 'clean' it, then perhaps it is best left alone, particularly if it is doubtful whether it will become popular (and if the crag is north facing and is that 'mucky' it probably won't!).
The climb should be more practical and easier in winter climbing equipment such as crampons and ice axes, than without their use.
If a rock climb were attemped in crampons and axes it would be possible to climb with hardly leaving a scratch as placements for feet and axes could clearly be seen.
