Coppin State University is a model urban, residential liberal arts university located in the northwest section of the City of Baltimore that provides academic programs in the arts and sciences, teacher education, nursing, graduate studies, and continuing education.
Fanny Jackson Coppin was born a slave in Washington, D.C. She gained her freedom, graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio, and founded the Philadelphia Institute that was the forerunner of Cheyney State University.
Coppin, which was officially renamed Coppin State University on April 13, 2004, is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

NORFOLK, Va.— The Coppin State University baseball team was eliminated from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament as the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore clamored 26 hits in the 16-6 victory at Marty L. Miller Field.
Coppin State was one of 19 schools earning certification by the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification without conditions.
