Of the two stars that mark the Hunting Dogs, the brightest is Cor Caroli, known as the "the Heart of Charles." A popular story is that the star was so-named by Edmund Halley in honor of King Charles II of England.
Cor Caroli marks the position of "Chara," one of the two hunting dogs in the mythological outline of the constellation.
Cor Caroli is the faintest of four stars that comprise a large diamond frame that can be found high in the sky and due south at around 10 p.m.

Cor Caroli, which means "Charles' Heart" in honor of England's King Charles II, is the luminary of the modern constellation Canes Venatici, the Hunting Dogs, invented in the 17th century by the astronomer Hevelius to help fill in the blanks left over by the ancients.
If you look on the line perpendicular to the Big Dipper's handle just toward the south, you find a pair of stars extending parallel to the handle; the brighter is Cor Caroli, the Alpha star.
Of greatest interest, Alpha-2 is a "magnetic star," possessing one of the strongest known magnetic fields among otherwise normal hydrogen-fusing dwarf stars.

The more northern Hound is Asterion (as is the title of beta), Starry, from the little stars marking the body and because it contains the M51 Whirlpool Nebula: The southern hound; which contains this star and beta (Asterion), the two brightest stars; is Chara, "Dear"; "dear to the heart of her master".
This was done at the suggestion of the court physician, Sir Charles Scarborough, who said that it had shone with special brilliancy on the eve of the king's return to London on the 29th of May, 1660.

Though I had observed Cor Caroli (STF 1692) many times in the past, a few years ago I found myself in the middle of an observing project in September and there it was on my list.
Olcott, in his book "In Starland with a Three-Inch Telescope", gives both components yellow and says this: "7 degrees north-northwest of Cor Caroli is "La Superba", a 5th magnitude star of brilliant red color.
It is one of seven or eight naked eye stars of 4th spectral class and is noted for the brilliant coloring of it's flashing rays" (in the hazy atmosphere at this low elevation, I could not pick out this red companion star).

An authority quoted by Burnham gives the original name of the star as Cor Caroli Regis Martyris, that is, "The Heart of Charles, The Martyred King" in honor of King Charles I, who was executed when the British monarchy was overthrown by Puritans in the British Civil War.
Burnham finds the attribution of the name to Halley in an 1801 publication, but can find no other verification for Halley as the creator of the name.
