The Cora Chaired Professor of Organisation Behaviour Charles Galunic and Erin Meyer of the Eaton Consulting Group consider the case of super- and hypermarket chain Cora, the largest component of the Brussels-based Louis Delhaize retail conglomerate, as it took a major leap into the unknown.
Cora had several successful outlets in Belgium, Luxembourg and the French Antilles, but was eager to tap into the Central and Eastern European (CEE) market, which had changed very little in its food retailing structure, and was being eyed hungrily by Cora's main European competitors.
Cora had already bought out a local wholesaler in 1989, and by the mid-90s, felt it had gathered enough intelligence on the rapidly maturing Hungarian market to make an intelligent strategic entry.

French-Belgian retailer, Cora-Louis Delhaize, has announced that it is expecting its Romanian operations to generate a turnover of 170 million euro in 2005, exceeding the initial estimate of 150 million euro.
The first Cora hypermarket in Romania, Cora Pantelimon, opened in 2003 after an investment of 50 million euro and generated a 100 million euro turnover in 2004.
Cora-Louis Delhaize is planning on opening one new Cora hypermarket in Romania in 2006, in the north-western city of Cluj-Napoca, following an investment of 25 million euro.

Romania's retail market is becoming more and more dynamic, given that new hypermarkets are to be opened in the capital Bucharest and other cities, the Romanian Rompres news agency reported on Tuesday.
Louis Delhaize Group, owner of Cora hypermarket chain, will inaugurate in the north-western city Cluj-Napoca a hypermarket in which it invested 21 million euros (about 27.9 million U.S. dollars).
It is to open five units in the coming months of this year and by the end of 2007, the company will have a chain of 15 stores.

The loan will enable Louis Delhaize, which currently has a turnover of €30 billion a year, to build three new hypermarkets in the country, including at least one in Budapest, in addition to its six existing buildings.
The expansion marks an important development in Hungary, where only about a third of retail food distribution is currently conducted through modern hypermarkets and supermarkets, compared with around 80 per cent in western Europe.
The EBRD may soon provide further finance for new hypermarkets owned by Louis Delhaize and operated under the Cora name in Romania and Serbia and Montenegro, where the market penetration of such stores is even lower.

Cora Romania now plans to build a second hypermarket in the country, with a projected turnover level of €150 million planned for 2005.The new store forms part of a major expansion plan, which is expected to see up to 14 new stores open over the next five years.

This was reported by Népszabadság, citing anonymous Hungarian workers at the Cora chain.
The Hungarian Cora chain, registered under the company name Magyar Hipermarket Kft., belongs indirectly to the Belgian Delhaize group, and had net revenue of HUF 98.58 billion (EUR 401 million) in 2003.
One of its competitors, hypermarket chain Tesco-Globál Hungary, had net sales of HUF 175.6 billion (EUR 708 million) in the first half of 2005, an increase of 15.8% from the same period of 2004, CEO Paul Kennedy said last week at the opening of Tesco’s 45th store in Hungary.

French-Belgian food-retailer Louis Delhaize is expanding its Cora hypermarkets chain in central and eastern Europe with the help of a €50 million loan from the EBRD, the region’s largest investor, and Raiffeisen Zentralbank Oesterreich AG (RZB), Austria’s third-largest bank.
Vincent Descours, CFO of Louis Delhaize, said the loan enables the company to accelerate its expansion of hypermarkets in central and eastern Europe, and provides difficult-to-obtain longer-maturity finance for the expansion.
“We already have close cooperation with Cora in Romania through our subsidiary there, and we are pleased to work alongside the EBRD once again, underscoring our position as a bank with the second-largest portfolio of transactions co-financed with the EBRD,” he said.
