Cora Diamond and Merrill Ring on Aims
Professor Cora Diamond, in notifying us of her interest in being a member, also submitted some criticism of the statement of the society’s aims.
Professor Diamond believes that such a statement of aims puts NAWS in the position of officially subscribing to a certain interpretation of the entire breadth of Wittgenstein’s philosophical life, namely the ‘two Wittgenstein’s view’.
Not all of those attracted to Tractatus scholarship today are hostile of course (see Diamond and Conant for instance.) But there are many who see the Tractatus as a legitimate object of study whose fundamental philosophical commitments are to Frege and who stand in strong opposition to the later Wittgenstein.

 Tutkijaseminaari - Filosofian laitokset
Diamond might argue as follows: When she turns to the 5.473's in the Tractatus her aim is only to lay bare that there is in the Tractatus no scope for a distinction between sentences which are simply nonsensical and others which while being nonsensical have the function of showing something determinate, deep but ineffable.
Diamond first notes that the 5.473's engage with the idea of there being two kinds of nonsense and say, or appear to say, that there is only one kind of nonsense.
Diamond again gives great emphasis to the notion that logic, according to her reading of the Tractatus, is not something external to language, it is "what joins together the sentences of the language which I do understand".

Diamond's contribution to Wittgenstein scholarship is distinguished by her striking and widely discussed suggestions about continuity between Wittgenstein's early and later writings.
“In her many papers on Wittgenstein, Cora Diamond has proved to be one of his most original and influential interpreters, revealing, with clarity and precision, what a truly radical thinker he was.
Less directly but just as importantly, the way his influence shows in her own thought--especially her work on the many facets of the moral life--has shown her to be one of the most probing, fertile, and independent-minded thinkers to have learned from him.

Diamond refers to Wittgenstein writing (in pre-Tractatus writings) that one cannot construct an illogical language, and that that would be one in which an event can be put in a hole.
Diamond’s use of this distinction psychological-logical is not quite satisfactory – it seems to work as a maneuver to explain away the inconsistencies in for example Wittgenstein’s use of the word nonsense and “pseudo-proposition” (Scheinsatz).

Against commentators such as Cora Diamond and James Conant, we argue that, in the case of Wittgenstein, recognising such a category of nonsense is necessary in order to understand the development of his thought.
It is here that we find the key tension in Diamond's version of the therapeutic account.43 Since she does not take the picture theory to have been advanced in a serious mode she is put in an awkward position when it comes to accommodating the importance that Wittgenstein places on the ethical.
And Diamond says: "for Wittgenstein there is no kind of nonsense which is nonsense on account of what the terms composing it mean - there is as it were no positive nonsense" Diamond, (1995), pp.
