Isolated regions in Indonesia are occupied by Temminck’s Roller (Coracias temminckii) and the Azure Roller (Eurystomus azureus).
Coracias take mainly large arthropods, almost always from the ground; Eurystomus are exclusively aerial feeders, taking flying insects after sallying forth from a high, exposed perch.
The appearance of Indian Roller (Coracias benghalensis) is considered to be a good omen, and it is widespread in India and the rest of South Asia.

An approximate population 5000 of them spend time in vast desert tracts of Kutch.


Excessive use of DDT and BHC (lethal insecticides banned otherwise) by the farmers in desert region of Gujarat and Rajasthan need to be checked.

It was nice to compare Indian (Coracias benghalensis) and European Rollers (Coracias garrulus) perched on the same overhead wire, about 50 yards apart.
I climbed up the new watchtower near the sanctuary entrance, and from there got a better view of the small area of open water.

 BirdForum - More ID Help!
No: 8 - Coracias caudata - Lilac-breated Roller and no 9 looks very much like its cousin Coracias abyssinica (Abyssinian Roller).
#8 is Coracias all right, but it looks like Coracias cyanogaster (Blue-bellied Roller).
The one in number 7 is in Paradisaea (either Greater or Lesser) - will try to figure out when I have more time.

These include the Azores Bullfinch (Pyrrhula murina), one of Europe's rarest songbirds, which has been in decline since the early 1990s, with fewer than 300 individuals left.
Several species from Europe appear in the list for the first time, like European Roller (Coracias garrulous), Krüper’s Nuthatch (Sitta krueperi), and Red Kite (Milvus milvus).
All three move from the Least Concern category to Near Threatened.
