Coral sand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Coral sand is sand of particles originating in tropical and sub-tropical marine environments from bioerosion of limestone skeletal material of marine organisms.
One example of this process is that of parrot fishes which bite off pieces of coral, digest the living tissue, and excrete the inorganic component as silt and sand.
In an effort to prevent damage from reef sand minding, the Convention on international trade in endangered species urged parties to the convention to work for the conservation and sustainable use of the coral reef ecosystems.

Coral calcium is derived from coral sand collected from the floor of the adjacent shallow seas or land masses of the Ryukyu Islands of Japan.

Coral calcium forms an exciting category of supplements, but its future is challenged somewhat by isolated "industry hype" that transcends our current level of scientific knowledge.

Where does St. John sand come from?
Sand beaches like these are found in areas where the water offshore is relatively shallow, the depth drops off gradually and the coral reefs and headlands are strategically located.
Most of our sand is produced by the force of waves and currents acting on the coral reef as coral, calcareous algae, (algae with a hard exoskeleton) the shells of various sea creatures and sea urchin spines (which make up those little fl grains of sand) are gradually broken down into sand sized grains.
However, sand from the drier upper portion of the beach is often blown by winds past the line of vegetation where it will stay forever in the form of soil.

The sand flat is made up of broken skeletons of corals, coralline algae, and other reef organisms derived from the reef front and coral flat and transported toward the lagoon as sands and gravels.
Reefs in the middle and inner parts are dominated by accumulations of sand, and the coral framework forms a much smaller proportion of the reef, reflecting the calmer sea, or lower energy conditions compared with the outer reef.
Coral reef primary productivity is usually very much higher than areas where these nutrients are more abundant but recycling rates of the corals and zooxanthellae are high but the harvestable primary productivity is low because most of the organic matter produced is metabolized and nutrients are freed to be reused in photosynthesis.

Corals are mainly colonies, budding new animals as the thin layer of tissue on top of the external skeleton expands in area.
Corals (and the algae that live in the corals) can only grow in a few regions of the world where the water is shallow enough for sufficient sunlight, where there is not too much silt in the water, and where the water temperature is warm enough---but not too warm.
Coral reefs are among the most beautiful ecosystems in the world but are also among the most susceptible to human impacts and are damaged or destroyed with alarming ease.

Live sand varies in its composition, depending on where it was collected, but it typically consists of coral sand (i.e., pulverized and eroded pieces of coral), pieces of the calcareous algae Halimeda and the remains of minute, shelled protozoa known as forams (Order Foraminiferida).
For example, sand collected from southern Florida tends to be lighter in color and usually of a smaller grade, while sand taken from the Gulf coast of Florida tends to be gray in color, the grains are of varying size and there are lots of larger bits of rubble mixed in.
Live sand is also being sent from the tropical Pacific Ocean, although it seems to be less "alive," possibly as a result of the long travel times and possible poor treatment that the sand is subjected to.
