Coralline algae   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The corallines in particular are now placed into the order Corallinales, though previously placed in the order Cryptonemiales which since has been absorbed by Gigartinales.
The thalli of coralline algae consist of inarticulate (inflexible; not jointed) crusts or nodules or of articulated branches.
Internally, coralline algal cells connect laterally via primary pit-connections and either direct secondary pit-connections or fusions (unisons of cells to form canals).

 H. William Johansen, Clark U. Biology Faculty   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Coralline algae are strongly calcified crustose or branching seaweeds (Rhodophyta) that are extremely prevalent on shallow underwater surfaces throughout the world oceans.
Hundreds of species of coralline algae successfully cope with growing and reproducing in the stresses of high wave energy, competition for limited space, herbivory, and other factors inherent in marine environments.
Students may elect to join or devise projects on corallines from regions such as Japan or South Africa where specimens are available or local projects on populations of Corallina officinalis growing on the shores of New England.

 Competitive interactions among crustose algae
In intertidal communities, much of the primary substratum is occupied by encrusting coralline algae (Adey and McIntyre, 1973; Johansen, 1981; Paine, 1984; Steneck, 1986; Steneck and Paine, 1986; Dethier et al., 1991; Steneck et al., 1991; Keats and Maneveldt, 1994; Keats et.
Corallines which regenerate secondary margins behind their primary margins, are able to slow down or stop the encroachment of thicker crusts.
In general, thicker corallines and those with raised margins have a competitive advantage over thinner ones and those with adherent margins of equal or greater thallus thickness (Paine, 1984; Steneck, 1986; Steneck et al., 1991).

 Articulated Coralline Algae ecology
An articulated coralline washed ashore with the beachrack.
Although some corallines grow in the high intertidal, most are located in the low intertidal or subtidal.
Thus, corallines are generally constrained to relatively shallow marine areas; this is not to say that they cannot be found in the ocean's deep though.

 REEF AQUARIUM CORALLINE ALGAE PROPAGATION
Coralline algae is one of the most important things to grow on tank raised live rocks.
We have noticed that new coralline algae starts to seed itself in the first month and it usually is found on the bottom base rock where the lighting is not so bright.

This resulted in the Coralline turning white around the edges (As Coralline dies and grows the edges of the it looked "bleached"), and dying back.

I was wondering, I've had my 55 gallon glass tank set up and running for year and a half and I've not had any pink coralline alge growth on my glass at all not even on the plastic over flow box.
I find this strage because when I used to have an acrylic tank it would be covered in pink and green coralline alge unless I scraped it off on a regular basis.

Introduction to the Rhodophyta   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Some rhodophytes are also important in the formation of tropical reefs, an activity with which they have been involved for millions of years; in some Pacific atolls, red algae have contributed far more to reef structure than other organisms, even more than corals.
These reef-building rhodophytes are called coralline algae, because they secrete a hard shell of carbonate around themselves, in much the same way that corals do.

The best known of these relationships produce fantastic coralline constructions from association of dinoflagellate zooxanthellae and anthozoan cnidarians.
It was thought that only one species of algal symbiont is found in coral colonies, but recent evidence suggest that a variety of dinoflagellates of the genus Symbiodinium associate with coral polyps.
