Algone.com - coralline algae in the marine and reef aquarium
Coralline algae enter the aquarium in two ways, either they are already attached to the cured live rock, or they have to be seeded.
In summary the advantages of coralline algae are that it outgrows the nuisance algae.
It is not the coral that form the reef, it is the coralline algae that cements the particles together thus building the reef.

Algae are photosynthetic organisms that occur in most habitats, ranging from marine and freshwater to desert sands and from hot boiling springs to snow and ice.
Algae are found in the fossil record dating back to approximately 3 billion years in the Precambrian.
Algae are important as primary producers of organic matter at the base of the food chain.

The red coralline algae belong to the phylum Rhodophyta.
The red coralline algae can incorporate calcium carbonate into their cell walls, giving their body a rigid, segmented appearance and texture.
Most of the red algae have the ability to carry on photosynthesis at much greater depths than other types of algae.

Algae belonging to the order Corallinales are charaterized by lime deposition, making them harder than any other calcifying plant.
The thalli of coralline algae consist of inarticulate (inflexible; not jointed) crusts or nodules or of articulated branches.

 Aquarium Algae
Green algae are clearly very closely related to plants but the kingdom Protista is paraphyletic and includes a very heterogenous assemblage of unicellular, colonial and multicellular eukaryotes that do not have the destinctive characteristics of the animals, plants or fungi.
Commonly algae are considered to be all of the photosynthetic organisms growing in water or water films that are not vascular plants.
Algae is quick to utilize light and carbon dioxide and can thus feed more efficiently on the nutrients present in freshwater than the plants, which take time to establish and root.

Another trick that helps spread coralline algae is to scrub the coralline on the glass or a rock just a little with an abrasive aquarium cleaning pad or tooth brush to create coralline dust that can be blown around and settle on the new rocks to grow.
Coralline would normally be quite obvious and starting to flourish on new concrete rock by the end of two months in a reef tank like this rock has been.
Coralline growth is still somewhat lacking, even with just a modest number of Mexican red leg blue spot hermit crabs present (C. digueti) which are cleaning the rock of alga, including coralline algae.

Coralline Lethal Orange Disease   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-27)
Given the importance of coralline algae in contributing material to the reef framework, it was particularly disturbing when a disease of coralline algae was discovered by Mark and Diane Littler in 1993 on reefs of the Cook Islands, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands.
A "band" of bright orange slimy material spreads across the algal surface, leaving behind the bare skeletal carbonate remains of the coralline algae.
The orange globules can be experimentally transferred to other coralline algae and cause the same disease and loss of algal tissue.

The encrusting Red Algae of marine aquariums are mainly of the non-jointed calcareous Subfamily Melobesioideae ("Mellow-beas-ee-dfpoy-day-ee"), in the Family Corallinacae (Order Cryptonemiales); they appear as thin crusts or nodular ridges.
The branched forms of calcareous red algae are mainly members of the Corallinaceae as well; but in a different Subfamily, the Corallinoideae, comprising the jointed (or articulated) corallines.
Other forms of red algae are more typically soft and string-like or flat sheets in body (thallus) shape and flexible in texture.

Rob Toonen - Larvae Settlement Cues .... #reefs Article www.reefs.org
While it is true that the larvae of many coral and mollusc species do respond to the presence of coralline algae as a settlement cue, the implication of GABA in that behavior is still of great debate among larval biologists.
My thought was that the red coralline algae might indicate to the shrimp larvae that it was over a coral reef and I thought it was worth a try.
That means that the coralline algae substrate (which would have a bacterial film associated with it) should elicit some small amount of settlement from competent larvae.

OZ REEF - How do you encourage coralline algae growth?
Coralline algae is a calcerous red algae that can come in a variety of different colours and growth forms.
Since coralline algae is calcerious, as with any other calcifying organism (such as hard corals) it requires similar conditions.
The required light intensity for coralline algae (as for any other photosynthetic organisms, including corals) depends on the actual species of algae and what it is adapted to grow in.
