Corangamite Shire Council offers its support to the Federal Government in its aim to develop a more strategic and integrated approach to the provision of transport infrastructure as proposed in the AusLink green paper.
Corangamite Shire Council's particular concerns relate to the impact that a regional approach will have on our local roads if funding is directed from implementation of rural local government asset management plans to undertake works identified as regional priorities.
Corangamite was recognised as having a 48.4% deficit in required annual infrastructure asset expenditure.

The Corangamite Shire is located in South West Victoria and was created by Order in Council on 23 September 1994.
The Shire comprises the former municipalities of Camperdown, Hampden and Heytesbury (excluding the Bungador, Carpedeit, Stoneyford area), a part of the Otway Shire (a portion of the Heytesbury Settlement area) and a small part of the former Mortlake Shire (the Lake Keilambete area).
Corangamite Shire has a wide variety of industries; one of the largest dairying regions in the Southern Hemisphere as well as a major producer of beef and lamb.

Summary Information: Corangamite Shire Council is located in South West Victoria and embraces an area of approximately 4,600 square kilometres from the 12 Apostles and Port Campbell in the south to Skipton in the north and the shores of Lake Corangamite in the east to the west of Terang.
The word 'Corangamite' is an Aboriginal word for 'bitter' which the Shire adopted from Lake Corangamite, the shores of which form part of the Shire's eastern boundary.

The head of VicHealth says a culture of binge drinking is partly responsible for a high level of alcohol-related deaths in Corangamite Shire.
New figures show the Barwon health region has a higher than average rate of deaths caused by alcohol, with the Corangamite Shire being 59 per cent above the general Victorian rate.
The chief executive of VicHealth, Rob Moodie, says there is a strong drinking culture in the area and the level of harmful binge drinking by young adult males and teenagers has been steadily increasing.

The introduction of a mobile childcare service by Corangamite Shire has proved to be a very effective way of addressing many service gaps by providing access to information, bringing families together in a supportive environment, and providing stimulating play activities and opportunities for socialisation for the children.
In 1992 the then Heytesbury Shire Council recognised that there was a huge need for childcare in the more isolated areas of the region, which could not be adequately serviced by existing means.
In addition to the lack of child care services in these areas, there was also a lack of other services such as playgroups, toy libraries, support networks and information services.
