MYSTERY!: An Unsuitable Job for a Woman: Full Series Description
Smart, strong-willed, fiercely independent, Cordelia Gray is back, with Edith Sparshott by her side, her dedication to the trade never stronger -- and undeterred by her new status as mother-to-be.
In the later stories, written directly for television, Cordelia finds herself juggling work and pregnancy, struggling to keep the agency solvent, while also trying to come to terms with the illness and death of her unborn child's father, a friend she knew briefly in Italy.
Cordelia is relieved to be offered, finally, what she believes is a simple surveillance case in Living on Risk.

Cordelia Gray is an engaging detective conveying just the right balance of ingenuousness and fierce determination, traits that continue her appeal in James's The Skull Beneath the Skin.
Cordelia Gray is a young woman learning her investigatory trade when her partner, Bernie Pryde, cuts his life short.
As soon as Cordelia starts searching and asking questions regarding the young heir's death, she finds herself convinced that the case is one of murder, not suicide, and that her own life may be at risk.

Cordelia had no need to adopt Bevis's expedient of dodging through the mid-morning traffic which cluttered Kingly Street and squinting at the plaque through a dazzle of grinding delivery vans and taxis to recognize stark mathematical fact: the neat bronze oblong, so carefully designed and so expensive, was half an inch out of true.
Cordelia avoided Bevis's eyes, which she guessed were rolling heavenward, and they climbed the narrow, linoleum-covered stairs in single file, Cordelia leading, past the single lavatory and washroom which served all the tenants in the building (she hoped that Sir George wouldn't need to use it), and into the outer office on the third floor.
Cordelia still used Bernie's old oak desk, still imagined that she could trace the outline of the bowl in which he had bled away his life, could still identify one particular stain of spilled blood and water.

"An Unsuitable Job for a Woman" is the ordeal of a female detective, Cordelia Gray, who is left with the struggle of single-handedly operating a detective agency left to her upon the death of her male partner.
Cordelia also inadvertantly causes the death of a third party by the end of her investigation and doesn't come clean when questioned by Scotland Yard's Inspector Adam Dalgliesh.
Finally, Cordelia's solitude is what's most vivid to me about this novel: an orphan who's cut off from the concerns of her own generation, she's in line with the mystery tradition's other great solitary seekers after truth: Sherlock Holmes, Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe.

That's the core question posed by the title of P.D. James's classic 1977 mystery novel, "An Unsuitable Job for a Woman." Cordelia Gray is a novice private investigator who makes some whopping mistakes in her investigation of the death of Cambridge undergraduate Mark Callender.
Maureen Corrigan: I think Cordelia's emotional distance from her own biological parents gives her a necessary "cold eye" with which to regard Mark's father.
