Her focus, and the novel's, is all on the past, on those images that surface unexpectedly, relentlessly, amid the glitz of the transformed city, images of the dead, of a lost time, and of Cordelia, her childhood friend and tormentor, her double.
Cordelia lives in one of the larger houses that have sprung up from the mud, a house with two stories, and a powder room, napkin rings, egg cups.

Cordelia and Aral are great characters, and the star-crossed lovers story works marvelously well, as does the messiness of Barrayar's politics.

Upon learning that Cordelia and her family have found Uncle Basil's legacy to be more perilous than at first it seemed, the Moosepath League's chairman leads his exuberant cohorts to the Underwoods' aid.
Like its Victorian antecedents, the novel was originally serialized in a local newspaper, forcing the author to keep the action moving and the characters memorable so that the readers would await the story's continuation with eager anticipation.
In Van Reid's sequel to Cordelia Underwood, Mollie Peer, or The Underground Adventures of the Moosepath League, a throng of Moosepath originals return, from the wise, courtly Tobias Walton and the exuberant founders of the Moosepath League to the furtive Eustace Pembleton and his ragamuffin ward.

His mother, Cordelia Naismith, is a captain in the Beta Colony Expeditionary Force, and his father, Count Aral Vorkosigan, is the head of the house Vorkosigan on the planet Barrayar, and a prominent figure in its (imperial) government.
Cordelia leads a mission to smuggle materials through to Escobar, and is subsequently captured by the Barrayarans, where she becomes wrapped up in a web of internal politics, narrowly escaping being raped, and meeting Aral again, who asks her to marry him.
The disappointment here is that none of these novels is really outstanding, especially compared to their predecessors, Cetaganda and Mirror Dance; none is bad, but except for a few scenes, all of them have the feel of being almost "routine" Miles novels, quite remarkable considering the major shifts in Miles' life which they depict.

She begins by the fact that Cordelia is a woman and continues by allowing her to show qualities that society would deem feminine.
On a separate note I was shocked to discover that P.D. James may have intentionally altered Cordelia’s character from the one in her first novel.

Finally, Cordelia's solitude is what's most vivid to me about this novel: an orphan who's cut off from the concerns of her own generation, she's in line with the mystery tradition's other great solitary seekers after truth: Sherlock Holmes, Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe.

Yes, Doyle is here and is extremely Doyle-ish in word and deed as he hits on Cordelia, hides from his bookie and helps in the protection of the innocent.
Oh, and there is also a plot to this novel (sadly not involving the nakedness of Doyle at any point), and it's a fairly inventive one.

Aware of this distinction between pianists and violinists, West consciously assigns the violin to Cordelia as a means of emphasizing the distance between Cordelia's performance and her sisters' art.
