British government donates VT 5 million towards Cordia alliadora utilization project
According to the Minister of Agriculture, Cordia alliodora is a native species of South America, introduced to Vanuatu on a trial basis in the late 70s and early 80s as a potential plantation species.
The Director General for the Ministry of Agriculture, Geoffrey Wilfred, said the cordia tree is grown in the north on Santo, Maewo, Malekula and Ambae, the Torres and the Banks and the south on Aneityum.
According to Vate, cordia became invasive due to the limited funds to manage its growth capacity and in 1999, all plantations that were used by the government to cultivate cordia, were returned back to customary landowners.

Cordia tree’s no weed - produces best products
Cordia alliodora is a native tree species of South American origin.
Cordia was introduced into Vanuatu in the early 1970s through a New Zealand funded plantation project, under a Local Supply Plantation (LSP) program, testing Cordia as a potential plantation species for Vanuatu.
Due to no available funds to manage the LSPs and Erromango IFP after the project phased out, the management of Cordia plantations has dropped and have resulted in the unmanaged state in which appropriate silvicultural regimes were not conducted, leading it to become a potential weedy plant.
