Topic: Cordierite

  Brevier Technical Ceramics
Cordierite materials and others based on it are magnesium aluminosilicates, fabricated by sintering soapstone or talcum with the addition of clay, kaolin, fireclay, corundum and mullite.
A simplified approximation to the composition of pure ceramic cordierite is approx.
Cordierite materials, moreover, behave inertly towards heating element alloys at temperatures up to 1,000°C or even 1,200 °C (there is no reaction between the heating element and the ceramic).

Process for preparing cordierite - Patent 5089456
Cordierite ceramics having a high thermal impact resistance have hitherto been used for honeycomb carriers widely used as exhaust gas cleaning catalysts for automobiles and carriers for combustion catalysts of domestic fan heaters.
A cordierite suitable for practical use may be prepared when the aluminum compound and the magnesium compound are used in respective amounts of 0.7 to 1 mol and 0.3 to 0.5 mol per mole of the silicon compound.
However, in order to prepare a pure cordierite having a composition of Mg.sub.2 Al.sub.4 Si.sub.5 O.sub.18, it is preferred to use the aluminum compound and the magnesium compound in respective amounts of 0.8 mol and 0.4 mol per mole of the silicon compound.

 CORDIERITE (Magnesium Aluminum Silicate)
Cordierite is not a well known or popular mineral for mineral collectors.
Only a few minerals such as cordierite and the zoisite variety called tanzanite are extremely pleochroic and it is very easy to see the color changes.
The strong pleochroism is the reason that cordierite and iolite are sometimes referred to by the synonym dichroite a greek word meaning two colored rock.

Cordierite ceramic filter - Patent 6261982
As a cordierite aggregate, a blend having magnesia, alumina and silica sand blended to have a cordierite composition of 2MgO.2Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.5SiO.sub.2, was electrically melted by means of carbon electrodes, and the obtained melt was poured into water and quenched to obtain a glass having the cordierite composition.
Hereinafter, the cordierite having a particle size of at least 74.mu.m added as an aggregate, will be referred to as coarse particles of cordierite, and the cordierite having a particle size of less than 74.mu.m added as a binder, will be referred to as a fine powder of cordierite, for distinction.
The cordierite ceramic filter of the present invention has been found to be excellent in strength and thermal shock resistance and has a small ventilation pressure loss by the control of the micro structure of ceramics, and thus it is particularly suitable for removal of dust in a high temperature gas.

Cordierite is a blue magnesium aluminosilicate mineral that is sometimes utilized as a gemstone.
Among the other notable characteristics of cordierite is its pronounced pleochroism, or propensity to exhibit different colors when viewed along different axes.
Among the minerals that are often associated with cordierite is anthophyllite, a member of the amphibole group.

In both cases, the impact of 4He cores (alpha particles) that were emitted from actinide-bearing mineral inclusions has caused the formation of radiation damage haloes in the host mineral.
This is indicated by rather moderate broadening of vibrational bands and, in the case of cordierite, apparently undisturbed electron diffraction patterns in the TEM.
Similar to observations on biotite, alpha particle haloes in chamosite and cordierite as obsd.

Gem quality cordierite has the same name (or rather names) as the mineral itself, but was in the past also known as water sapphire, particularly when the color was not very intense.
One also comes across cordierites with a cabochon cut or minutely engraved, particularly in the case of less transparent specimens with numerous inclusions.
Many cordierites have a decidedly cold, grayish coloration, whereas tanzanite is a warmer color, always with a hint of violet.

Cordierite has a relatively high melting point and remarkable expansion properties and is sold as all sorts of kiln (and other high temperature) hardware, but the melting point is lower than mullite's.
Natural cordierite is birefringent, meaning it shows different colors depending on the angle the light passes through the crystal.
That has to be a typo, but nonetheless it does make light of the point that cordierite is, unfortunately for firing purposes, an eutectic composition.

In the case of beryl and cordierite, the tetrahedral rings are cross-linked by additional tetrahedra.
The case for calling beryl a cyclosilicate is a bit stronger than cordierite, since the Be and Si tetrahedra are distinct.
At high temperatures cordierite is hexagonal, implying that the ordering of Al and Si in the rings must be completely random, but on cooling it distorts to orthorhombic, pseudohexagonal symmetry, probably because the Al settle into an ordered arrangement.
