Andes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cordillera de la Costa begins near Cape Horn, which is composed principally of crystalline rocks, and its heights are inconsiderable when compared with those of the true Cordillera of the Andes.
The latter, as regards its main chain, is on the northern coast of the Beagle Channel in Tierra del Fuego, bounded on the north by the deep depression of Lake Fagnano and of Admiralty Sound.
While the western range of the Cordillera is principally formed by volcanic rocks, the eastern (to the east of the range is Cerro Potosí, (4700 m (15,400 ft) Andes of Bolivia are chiefly composed of old crystalline rocks.

The Andean Cordillera is the consequence of a complex series of tectonic uplifts from the Late Cretaceous accompanied by volcanic activity in the Oligocene and Miocene, followed by widespread erosion in the Late Tertiary.

Lake Valencia (Spanish: Lago de Valencia) is the second largest lake in Venezuela, exceeded in size only by Lake Maracaibo.
It occupies one of the so-called Aragua valleys, enclosed between the parallel mountain ranges of the Cordillera de la Costa, the Maritime Andes.
Despite its picturesque location between the Cordillera de la Costa to the north and the Serrania del Interior to the south, Lake Valencia’s poor water quality limits opportunities for tourism and recreational activities.

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Cordillera La Costa montane forests (NT0117)
The Cordillera de la Costa, or Costa mountain range, is separated from the Andes by the Yaracuy depression, and from the southern forests of the Guyanan floristic province by the extensive Llanos.
Two main portions of the western Cordillera de la Costa are usually recognized, the Serranía del Litoral in the northern mountain range along the coastline of the Caribbean Sea, and the Serranía del Interior south of Valencia lake and the valleys of Caracas.
The climate of the Cordillera de la Costa is strongly influenced by the north-eastern trade winds, specially during the dry season from December to April, whereas during the rainy season the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) reaches its northern winds with high moisture.

Lost amid the rolling forests of the Cordillera de la Costa, some 60km (37mi) west of Caracas, is the unusual mountain town of Colonia Tovar.
Founded in 1843 by a group of German settlers, the town effectively shielded itself from any outside contact for almost a century: A lack of roads restricted access, and rigid social mores meant that the inhabitants remained exclusively tied to their own culture (marriage, for instance, was prohibited unless to another member of the colony).

The Cordillera de la Costa belt along the coast of Venezuela consists of a mixture (melange) of rocks of "oceanic" and "continental" affinities metamorphosed at greenschist facies conditions with knockers of eclogite, kyanite-glaucophane schist, and blueschist, whereas the Villa de Cura belt to the south consists of coherent blueschists with only "oceanic" protoliths.
Both belts were metamorphosed during mid Cretaceous in the subduction zone where "Proto-Caribbean" sea floor was overridden by the NE to E migrating "Great Arc of the Caribbean".
These two belts have variable degrees of retrograde overprinting ranging from minimal for the Villa de Cura belt to extensive for the Cordillera de la Costa belt.
