In mid-2000, Queens of the Stone Age issued their sophomore album, R (as in the movie rating; some promo copies were distributed with the original title, "II"), before appearing on that year's Ozzfest tour.
One of the year's most eagerly anticipated hard rock albums, Songs for the Deaf was issued in August of 2002, and was preceded by a tour that saw Oliveri and Homme joined by Grohl on drums, ex-Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan, and A Perfect Circle guitarist/keyboardist Troy Van Leeuwen.
A handful of their demo songs were re-recorded together with new material and the band released their debut album 'Core' in September 1992, shortly after changing their name to Stone Temple Pilots.

Steve's new 2001 solo release CORE has evolved into a dynamic convergence of his most essential organic, electronic, rhythmic and atmospheric elements and what could be his most elegant and powerful dynamic solo release in years.
And in the central track, number 6/7, Core Meditation, he returns to the shamanic power of his monumental albums from the mid-90's, Origins (1993) and Artifacts (1994), mixing it with some of the dark metallic drones from The Magnificent Void (1996) as well as the thunderous looped percussion of On This Planet (1997).
It is at track 6, Core Meditation, that Roach reaches the "heart" of the album (it is an interesting pun that in Latin, the word "cor" means "heart") and unleashes the cosmic powers.

Although this album is basically spoken word and, for some, too weird to even enjoy, Jello Biafra's brilliance as a lyricist and a song writer really shine through on this album.
This album is the only reason punk ever developed into a real genre and not always considered "new-age." Although every song does sort of sound the same, every song is good.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Core - Stone Temple Pilots at Epinions.com
Anyways, while their debut album, Core, the album I'm now reviewing, is not their best work, it is still a highly enjoyable album of crunching guitar riffs, brain thumping drums, and sky high (no pun intended) vocal performances.
Core became a cornerstone of 1990s rock collections not just because of the music, but because of who produced it: Brendan O'Brien.
O'Brien's influence on the early albums of bands such as STP, Pearl Jam, and Rage Against the Machine cannot be understated, and I'm truly not sure if this album would sound as good as it does without his mastery.

Their 1992 debut album, Core, invited comparisons to a host of other current alternative rock acts from the Pacific Northwest's burgeoning music scene, but the Stone Temple Pilots actually paid their proverbial dues in southern California.
Shortly before their debut album's scheduled release, their lawyer discovered that the name Mighty Joe Young was already being used by an aged blues artist and they would need a new name.
Core's first single, "Sex Type Thing," was a strident message against date rape written by Weiland that nevertheless was sometimes read the wrong way as being pro-date-rape.

The album then appears to slow down on the second track, "The Red Light Pledge", with a slow build up, where the riffs are heavy, but the other musicians remain mellow, giving the song a rather good feel with the occasional scream between choruses.
The album closes on a brillant note, with the title track, "When Broken Is Easily Fixed", which is not only the album's best song, but its heaviest as well.
The fact that it is the album's heaviest song isn't what makes is good though, the song is well written and executed with perfection, putting the rest of the album to shame by how good it is. "When Broken is Easily Fixed" is an excellent way to close a typical, but good emo-core album.

They have improved on each one so far, and by now "Core" is just a sample of how great their other albums went on to be.
Weiland's voice lacks the vocal quality that it has on the next four albums, the songwriting lacks the melodic and artistic qualities that the next four albums have, and Core simply lacks the diversity that the next four albums have.

Having scored a massive hit with their debut album, Core, Stone Temple Pilots returned to the same sludge-filled well for Purple, only to come up with an album that's harder, more concise, and filled with thunderous, punishing riffs.
Other highlights of this album is the mellow, slow "Big Empty" that clarifies the great variety Scott Weiland has to his musical ability to write and sing.
Core may be a replica of early 90s grunge, but Purple clearly solidifies Stone Temple Pilots as one of the great bands of the 90's and even into this decade.

The thing is, and this is a comparitive thing with the subsequent albums, that 'Core' is more of a single level kind of album.
Where subsequent albums managed a greater level of diversity 'Core' is grounded in a much more set sound (possibly this is down to a production decision) and where this could be a unifying element in some albums on this it makes the album a little (and only a little) flat.

The fact that STP never lost the knack for writing great hooks throughout their five releases, and that Pearl Jam's music became increasingly less commercial, more arty, confirm that for me (not to say that one band is superior to the other, as they were/are both great in their own right).
And while the band's debut "Core" took the cue from some of it's peers, it's still a classic album and is a cornerstone to any good 90s rock collection.
