		At a Core Knowledge school, the Core Knowledge Sequence is not viewed as a resource to pick and choose from; rather, it is viewed as the common ground of content upon which a faculty meets and collaborates to begin teaching a coherent, content- rich curriculum.
		Rather, the content in Core Knowledge is meant to strengthen and supplement skills instruction in reading, by helping ensure that children gain not only mechanical literacy (decoding skills) but also cultural literacy (a broad range of background knowledge taken for granted by educated writers and speakers in the United States).
		At Core Knowledge schools, teachers have clear and specific expectations about what children should know and be able to do, and so can concentrate their efforts on helping all children meet those specific expectations.

		Schools have found that Core Knowledge works well with students who are below grade level, because while they may not be able to read at the level of their peers, they are able to grasp Core Knowledge material which is presented through activities or hands-on projects.
		The sites that have been implementing Core Knowledge the longest have become well known in their areas as Core Knowledge schools, and therefore the teachers that tend to apply for jobs are those interested in teaching Core Knowledge.
