Topic: Core Foundation

[No title]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
At a Core Knowledge school, the Core Knowledge Sequence is not viewed as a resource to pick and choose from; rather, it is viewed as the common ground of content upon which a faculty meets and collaborates to begin teaching a coherent, content- rich curriculum.
Rather, the content in Core Knowledge is meant to strengthen and supplement skills instruction in reading, by helping ensure that children gain not only mechanical literacy (decoding skills) but also cultural literacy (a broad range of background knowledge taken for granted by educated writers and speakers in the United States).
At Core Knowledge schools, teachers have clear and specific expectations about what children should know and be able to do, and so can concentrate their efforts on helping all children meet those specific expectations.

 Model Details
Core Knowledge focuses on teaching a common core of concepts, vocabulary, skills, and knowledge that characterize a “culturally literate” and educated individual.
Core Knowledge is based on the principle that the grasp of a specific and shared body of knowledge will help students establish strong foundations for higher levels of learning.
However, when Core Knowledge schools where less than 50 percent of teachers were implementing the sequence were excluded, the performance of the Core Knowledge students at the remaining schools was higher than that of control students in both subjects, particularly in the third-to-fifth grade cohort.

In writing In Search of the Common Core the author assumes the subjective consciousness of an individual human person to be where the ultimate criteria may be found for all judgments, standards, and values.
While experts within a given field may communicate effectively about their professional concerns, an engineer, for example, is not likely to speak with ease and precision to an artist, or to a farmer, about what is common to all three by virtue of their being human.
