Coreference resolution is carried out by attempting to merge each newly added instance with instances already present in the discourse model.
However, the point at which the coreference chains are reduced is significant: selecting the longest coreference chain and subsequently removing all non-focus entries before output may give differnt results than an initial selection of the longest focus chain.
The current results demonstrate there may need to be subtle interactions between the selection of coreference chains and given topic descriptions, such as the use of event chains for certain tasks, but the simple selection of a single chain may be still be useful as the basis for generic summaries.

In (1), coreference is prohibited because the pronoun c-commands the r-expression.
If coreference relations across speakers in discourses like (3) are constrained by Principle C, then the expectation is that children should demonstrate mastery of the facts in (1-4) as early as they can be feasibly tested.
If children disallow coreference of the pronoun and r-expression in utterances like (1) and (3), which are different constructions, this would be evidence that there is an underlying constraint (Principle C).

At the Feb. 96 meeting of the Coreference and Ellipsis working group, the suggestion was made to distinguish markups that are optional because of textual ambiguity from markups that are optional because of unclear or missing markup guidelines.
Coreference markup should be made on the body of the text and on corpus-specific portions of the header.
The coreference judgments should be based on the intelligent reader's knowledge of the world resulting from his or her best understanding of the text.

Coreference analysis, also known as record linkage or identity uncertainty, is a difficult and important problem in natural language processing, databases, citation matching and many other tasks.
Unlike other relational models of coreference that are generative, the conditional model here can incorporate a great variety of features of the input without having to be concerned about their dependencies— paralleling the advantages of conditional random fields over hidden Markov models.
We present experiments on proper noun coreference in two text data sets, showing results in which we reduce error by nearly 28% or more over traditional thresholded record-linkage, and by up to 33% over an alternative coreference technique previously used in natural language processing.

Coreference links are either a single defining coreference label or a sequence of zero or more bound labels.
The coreference links that connect concepts to concepts are drawn as dotted or dashed lines that are lighter in weight than the arcs that link conceptual relations to concepts.

 Workshop on Linguistic Coreference
In computational linguistics, the problem of coreference took early on the form of pronoun antecedent resolution, and this particular task, somewhat broadened to include a few other types of anaphora, still remains in the center of the problem.
While it has been recognized since quite early in the game that coreference resolution is based in large part on world knowledge, most of the work done on the matter computationally and theoretically ignores and avoids world knowledge.
The result is that coreference phenomena are treated as self-obvious, and most of them are overlooked, especially if they are not explicit pronoun-antecedent or other equally evident anaphora cases.

 Coreference: Introduction
The term `coreference annotation' is used in an informal way in corpus work to indicate both the annotation of (generalized) anaphoric information and of information about reference proper.
As well as using syntactic constraints to cut down on the number of coreference annotations, it is also possible to specify restrictions on the kinds of objects in the world for which coreference is of interest.
One good reason for limiting coreference annotation exercises by restricting the set of relations to be marked is that for many of the most interesting relations, reliable annotation schemes have not yet been developed.

Noun phrase coreference resolution refers to the problem of determining which noun phrases refer to each real-world entity mentioned in a document.
Coreference is a key task in a number of NLP applications and is often cited as one of the most difficult problems in NLP owing to its reliance on sophisticated world knowledge.
In contrast to most existing coreference resolution algorithms that employ hand-crafted heuristics and filters, we are interested in applying supervised machine learning techniques to the construction of robust and portable coreference systems.

Let us first look at a coreference problem in local pragmatics, the resolution of a definite noun phrase (from IA, Section 5.1).
Coreference resolution is not a special process in the IA approach, but rather just an instance of pragmatic strengthening, of finding the best abductive proof of the explicit content of the sentence.

Problems for the Models   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
On the coreference model, identity sentences are true because the signs stand in the relation of coreference to one another.
This means, however, that the coreference model and the object model have the same truth conditions.
we might say that the coreference model mistakes the mention of the signs `a' and `b' for their use (in natural language), which is to pick out the objects a and b.

Abstract: This paper introduces a new, unsupervised algorithm for noun phrase coreference resolution.
It differs from existing methods in that it views coreference resolution as a clustering task.
In an eval- uation on the MUC-6 coreference resolution cor- pus, the algorithm achieves an F-measure of 53.6% placing it firmly between the worst (40%) and best (65%) systems in the MUC-6 evaluation.

Coreference: Selected schemes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
Given that most coreference work is currently done with schemes which are not particularly reliable, and that there is little general agreement on the names of relations to use, we have adopted a modular approach to coreference schemes by which users can construct a scheme which is appropriate for them.
Because the semantics of anaphora and coreference is relatively well-understood, it is possible to extract from the schemes discussed above a fairly short list of options available to the designer of a scheme.
The workbench will support the whole range of elements and attributes of the meta-scheme; the task of the designer of a scheme will be to identify the options of interest among those supported by the workbench, ignoring the rest.

The key idea is that when they intend coreference, speakers avoid (1) — (2) in favor of (1') — (2'):
So, if a speaker chooses (1) or (2) in favor of (1') or (2'), the hearer can conclude that (assuming she is cooperative) the speaker does not intend coreference.
