Corio, formely known as Cowie, is a residential and industrial, and one of the largest suburbs of Geelong, Victoria, Australia, located approximately 9 km north of the Geelong central business district.
By the 1860s, Corio was home to two hotels and a population of approximately 500 people.
Corio will be bypassed by traffic on the Princes Freeway by the creation of the Geelong Bypass, due for completion in 2009.

In 1993 urban sprawl forced the de facto recognition that Geelong, Geelong West, Newtown, South Barwon, Bellarine and the shire of Corio were effectively a continuous whole and they were amalgamated to form the City of Greater Geelong which, in 1996, had a population of 175,409.
Industry was further expanded with the opening of a boot factory in 1874, a paper mill in 1878, a saltworks and cement works in 1888, a butter and cheese factory in 1893 and a meat-freezing works in 1894.
Brougham St and Corio St (which runs parallel to Brougham just to the south) were the commercial hub of the old port.

I've heard that it was first distilled in 1982 at the old Milne Distillery in Geelong, Victoria.
This 2000 gallon steam jacket copper pot still was one of the original units imported from Scotland in 1928 by the Distillers Company of Edinburgh, when it established the Distillers Corporation at Corio.
The Corio Distillery closed in 1980 and the plaque commemorates the link between the shire of Corio and the Scottish Disillery Company over a period of 52 years.
