"Getting Around The Coriolis Force" - Revised Nov 15, 2000
The Coriolis effect is a force in the first sense, but not in the second sense: nothing is actually pushing or pulling on anything, the acceleration is due to the fact that the observer is moving in a circle.
As a result, the Coriolis effect generally doesn't have a noticeable effect to people on the ground; the speed of the point you're standing on and the speed of the point you're stepping onto are too close for you to tell the difference.
The Coriolis effect "pushes" them away from the axis, and gravity pulls the object back down to the ground so that the remaining effect is an apparent "push" to the south.

Coriolis Force: an artifact of the earth's rotation
This apparent deflection is called the "Coriolis force" and is a result of the earth's rotation.
As air moves from high to low pressure in the northern hemisphere, it is deflected to the right by the Coriolis force.
In the southern hemisphere, air moving from high to low pressure is deflected to the left by the Coriolis force.

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Coriolis Force Effect on Drains
This is due to the Coriolis Effect, which is caused by the rotation of the Earth.
The twisting effect of the Coriolis force is real and does influence certain large things like the movement of air masses, but the effect is so small that it plays no role in determining the direction in which water rotates as it exits from a draining sink or toilet.
The configuration of taps and drains is responsible for the direction of spin given to water draining from sinks and bathtubs to a degree that overwhelms the slight influence of the Coriolis force.

  Coriolis effect Summary
The Coriolis effect caused by the rotation of the Earth is responsible for the precession of a Foucault pendulum and for the direction of rotation of cyclones.
In meteorology, Coriolis effects tend to dominate the centrifugal effects associated with, for example, the rotation of large cyclones, because the latter are usually balanced by an ambient pressure gradient (exactly analogously to the slope on a parabolic turntable).
In the oceans, Coriolis is responsible for the propagation of Kelvin waves and the establishment of the Sverdrup balance.

 Coriolis biography
Coriolis was offered Cauchy's position at the École Polytechnique but by this time he was highly involved in his research and decided not to take on any further teaching duties.
Coriolis continued teaching at the École Polytechnique until 1838 when he decided to end teaching and take on the role of director of studies.
Coriolis began developing his ideas in 1819 and he showed some papers to Poncelet in 1824.

Inwit Publishing, Inc. and Inwit, LLC -- Writings, Links and Software Demonstrations - The Coriolis Force
The Coriolis force due to the earth's rotation continuously nudges the pendulum to swing in a new plane.
Reportedly Coriolis was led to his theory of accelerations on rotating frames from his study of water wheels.
The Coriolis force is the only fictitious force which is dependent on the motion of the body with respect to the non-inertial frame.

 Coriolis Mass Flowmeters
Coriolis mass flowmeters measure the force resulting from the acceleration caused by mass moving toward (or away from) a center of rotation.
In a Coriolis mass flowmeter, the "swinging" is generated by vibrating the tube(s) in which the fluid flows.
Coriolis mass flowmeters measure the mass flow of liquids, such as water, acids, caustic, chemicals, and gases/vapors.

Half-circle measuring tube—The Coriolis force deforms this part and it is therefore the active measurement element in the meter.
External noise effects remain at a minimum because the measurement section is separate from the environment by the mass of the crossbar and, apart from the pick-up devices that measure the deflection induced by the Coriolis force, the section is free of additional elements that could resonate and disturb the measurement.
Extremely high-pressure Coriolis meter for hydrogen and other media—Recently, the offshore industry and the automotive industry have shown increased interest in very high-pressure Coriolis meters—the offshore industry for measuring high pressure injection of corrosion inhibitors or similar, and the automotive industry for the dispensing of high-pressure H2.

 eFunda: Introduction to Coriolis Flowmeters
Coriolis meters are available in a number of different designs.
An advantage of Coriolis flowmeters is that it measures the mass flow rate directly which eliminates the need to compensate for changing temperature, viscosity, and pressure conditions.
Please also note that the vibration of Coriolis flowmeters has very samll amplitude, usually less than 2.5 mm (0.1 in), and the frequency is near the natural frequency of the device, usually around 80 Hz.

 Bad Coriolis
Called the Coriolis Effect, it is caused by the rotation of the Earth.
The Coriolis force is so small, that it plays no role in determining the direction of rotation of a draining sink anymore than it does the direction of a spinning CD.
The Coriolis force is so tiny that it cannot cause the rotation in the faker’s draining pan; indeed at only ten meters to either side of the equator, it is so tiny that it could influence neither the carefully performed experiment (described above) nor the large scale motions of weather systems.
