Cork (Corcaigh in Irish) is the second city of the Republic of Ireland and Ireland's third most populous city after Dublin and Belfast respectively.
Cork's most famous building, also accessible to the public, is the church tower of Shandon dominating the North side of the city, with the North and East sides faced in red sandstone, and the West and South sides in the predominant stone of the region, white limestone.
Cork is also home to one of Ireland's main national newspapers, the Irish Examiner (formerly the Cork Examiner) with its headquarters situated in Academy Street in the city centre.

Since July, refuse collection crews in Cork have only handled refuse from bins bearing corporation stickers, which indicate that the householder has paid the charges.
In July, the corporation introduced a new get-tough policy to combat the non-payment of service charges.

A move to freeze a £41 million deal to transfer 111 acres of Cork Corporation land to property developer Mr Owen O'Callaghan last night failed after councillors were advised the sale contract was legally binding, while the motion to freeze the move had no legal standing.
Green Party councillor Mr Dan Boyle had proposed that the corporation put a temporary stay on the transfer of lands at Mahon Point to O'Callaghan Properties pending confirmation of evidence to the Flood tribunal.
However, Cork Corporation law agent Mr David O'Hagan advised councillors that the corporation was legally bound by the agreement it had signed with O'Callaghan Properties and any attempt to withdraw or delay would expose them to legal action.

 RTE News - High Court adjourns Cork refuse collection case
The High Court has adjourned until Wednesday next, an application for an injunction preventing Cork Corporation from suspending further refuse collections in a dispute over collection fees.
In court, Alderman O'Connell described the delay as "a diabolical ruse" by the Corporation, and told the judge that the citizens of Cork were facing a health risk because the Corporation was refusing to collect bins without prepaid tickets.
Since July, refuse collection crews in Cork have only removed refuse from bins bearing corporation stickers.
