On the night of 12th December 1955, Cork Opera House was destroyed by fire caused by an electrical fault.
It was altered and enlarged in 1877 and reopened as the Theatre Royal and Opera House.
The front of house extension of Cork Opera House was officially opened by Minister Síle de Valera on 5th October 2000.

we started out for the city centre, with directions to the Opera House from the hostel owner which I was sure were wrong, since I had looked carefully at a map before we had arrived.
We came into the city centre, looked at a map and asked directions (I had been right, of course), went to the Opera House, and decided we had time for something to eat.
Joey was really the star of the show (as someone said later in his Cork accent, "Joey rocked the house!"), but nearly everyone was in good form.
