  Corktown, Toronto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Corktown is an historic neighbourhood located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
In the early 1960s, a significant amount of Corktown was demolished to make way for several elevated roadways, including the Richmond Street off-ramp from the Don Valley Parkway and the re-routed Eastern Avenue overpass, which remain a blight to the neighbourhood.
Corktown was also the site of the first Roman Catholic church in Toronto: St. Paul's was originally built in 1822.

Corktown is a minuscule little pocket of the city just outside of downtown and anchored by the large, yet historic, white elephant that was once the Detroit Tigers' home field.
Corktown's Irish seemed to reside rather agreeably with another wave of European islanders who settled in the neighborhood around 1900-the Maltese.

As the initial destination of many of Detroit's immigrant populations, the Corktown Historic District has been home to the people who built and worked in Detroit's industries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Corktown suffered in the 1950s and 60s, however, when "urban renewal", highway construction, and business district encroachment swallowed up or flattened dozens of blocks.
The buildings of the Corktown Historic District are largely private residences, although some Michigan Avenue commercial buildings are open to the public.

Since many of these came from County Cork, their neighborhood came to be known as "Corktown." In 1853, half the population of the Eighth Ward (which took in Corktown) was of Irish descent.
Part of Corktown's revival actually has to do with the Tigers moving, although the businesses and residents initially thought the move was going to kill the neighborhood.
Corktown is one of the few true neighborhoods left in inner city Detroit that has not been seriously marred by urban redevelopment projects from the 50s/60s, although I-96 was paved right through the middle of it.

CCHC was founded in the 1960's as a number of organizations and individuals in the neighborhood, including Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Corktown Historical Society, came together to form the Holy Trinity Non-profit Housing Corporation.
GCDC is shifting its main affordable housing emphasis away from the traditional Corktown neighborhood because there has been substantial improvement in that community, as demonstrated by market rate developments that have produced townhouses and lofts.
North Corktown encompasses the area north of I-75 and south of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Interstate-75 was installed south of the neighborhood fracturing it from the vibrant Corktown neighborhood.

This toxic poisoning has had a bad effect on me. Although my blindness is unrelated, the toxins in my system have caused me to have two seizures, like an epileptic fit.
The seizures have occurred three weeks apart and the second one was Saturday morning after the gig at the Corktown.
I didn't like the stress of the unfamiliar territory at the Corktown (Nash figures he could walk that place blindfolded.

With Tiger Stadium and a beautiful Detroit skyline providing the aesthetics, the 16th Annual St. Patrick's Parade Corktown Races began with the 1/4 Mile Children's Run.
All of the above happened except for the rain part on the 16th running of the St. Patrick's Parade 4 Mile Run in delightfully sunny, city on the move, by the old ballpark, we love you Corktown: Detroit.

Corktown's favorite deli is Irish all the way, with potato bread, Limerick ham and blarney cheese.
Eph McNally's is a very nice little restaurant in Corktown on Porter street.
The hours are from about 10am to 4pm, a little to short for my tastes, but I manage to get there anyway.
