		having released 3 albums in the mid-80's, that soundtracked my formative years, barry andrews returns to the fray under the shriekback banner to release the first album in many years that actually feels, looks and sounds like a proper shriekback album.
		which seeing as the roots of this album came about through death, is only to be expected, but please, don't think that this is a misery-fest, there is plenty on offer to make you smile, swoon, and even dance a little.
		having spun the album solidly for a few days, it's great to hear such beautiful attention to sonic detail in these days of fast-n-furious, ear shredding productions, the warm bubbly bass line of 'the strongest wind that blows' is of particular note, with treated pianos for added excellence.

		Cormorants have a long hook-tipped bill, patches of bare skin on the face, and a small gular sac (throat pouch).
		The largest and most widespread species is the common, or great cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo; white-cheeked, and up to 100 cm (40 inches) long, it breeds from eastern Canada to Iceland, across Eurasia to Australia and New Zealand, and in parts of Africa.
		Cormorants dive for and feed mainly on fish of little value to man. Guano produced by cormorants is valued as a fertilizer.

	Shriekback - Cormorant
		These days the Gang of Four element (bassist Dave Allen) is no longer there, yet on Cormorant, their tenth album, XTC are represented not only by band mainstay Barry Andrews but also Andy Partridge, reuniting the pair for the first time since the Go 2 album of 1978.
		Cormorant sees Andrews (keyboards and vocals) joined by Martyn Barker on drums and percussion, Mark Raudva on bass, and a plethora of guests including Andrews' son Finn, who takes a break from The Veils to add some vocals.
		It is true that this is an album that certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you are someone who appreciates well-crafted lyrics over the usual musical niceties then it may well have something to offer.

		One of the stranger experiences we had was a nighttime cormorant fishing expedition.
		He then releases six large birds (cormorants) from their cages on top of the boat.
		Cormorant fishing like this has been going on for centuries, but of course back in the days the fishermen were using only a couple of birds and a bamboo raft.

		CORMORANTS are large fl seabirds with long necks and tails.
		The pelagic cormorant (P. pelagicus) has a dark face and a thin, dainty bill; we found it in most areas except the Pribilofs.
		Two uncommon cormorants in our area are the double-crested cormorant (P. auritus), a large cormorant of harbors and bays, and Brandt's cormorant (P. penicillatus), which has a blue face and is occasionally seen in southeastern Alaska.

		They are dark overall with an orange throat patch.

		Cormorants are good sized birds who, like the Anhingas found in the Everglades, enjoy diving underwater in search of fish.
		When they catch a fish they return to the boat and the fisherman removes the fish from their throat and places it in the basket.

		I have decided that I really need to write two reviews for "Cormorant," one that is a working song-by-song and another that hits the highlights of the album and would be suitable for magazines (online and off).
		"Cormorant" is the type of album that requires numerous auditions though.
		What I want to see happen is for the album to take off like nobody's business and give Barry the idea that more people than he realises know and admire him, and are keen to listen to his music.

		All I can tell you from personal observations is that for a number of years the cormorant population seemed to grow and grow, with a large number taking up residence on the Oswego harbor breakwalls on a daily basis.
		Last year after a few took the law into their own hands and shot a small percentage of the birds, there was a noticable difference in cormorant sightings.

		I suspected I could have liked it if not for that, but the record used her voice so prominently that I couldn't ignore it, even temporarily, for the purpose of figuring out whether it was worth learning to like her.

		The cloaked magician is again a sort of Dr. Strange figure as it was on 'Past, Present and Future', Al's previous album.
		Surprisingly best Christmas album: Barry Manilow, "Because It's Christmas." I got this as a PBS premium for contributing, in 1993, and never played it until last week.

		The Cormorant, Rescue 908 out of Gander, Newfoundland, flew out to Andreas and stayed on scene until they witnessed him climb onboard the Federal Elbe
		Within Rescue 908 were 2 Search and Rescue Technicians that were ready to deploy into the water to recover Andreas should the freighter be unable to.

		Regarding the mix of songs, I actually would have preferred a few more solo Art songs, or perhaps a better selection of his solo stuff ("Crying in the Rain" is pleasant enough but pretty unremarkable, even with JT on vocals).
		On a semi-related note: this isn't exactly a new album, but late last year a friend recommended an album by Jimmy Webb, author of quite a few Garfunkel songs ("All I Know", "Scissors Cut") as well as some 60s/70s chestnuts ("McArthur Park," etc.).
		It's basically Webb at piano playing a bunch of his songs, most of which were recorded and made famous by others, and it's quite good.
