Corneliu Zelea Codreanu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Codreanu clashed with Cuza on the issue of the League's structure: he demanded that it develop a paramilitary character, while Cuza was hostile to the idea.
Codreanu felt he had to amend the purpose of the movement after more than two years of stagnation: he and the leadership of the movement started touring rural regions, addressing the churchgoing illiterate population with the rhetoric of sermons, dressing up in long white mantles and instigating Christian prejudice against Judaism
Codreanu's resurgence brought arrest and prosecution under the martial law imposed in the country; he was acquitted yet again.

His education was proper for the nationalist theories: his father, Ion Zelinsky (Ion Zelea Codreanu), was a Romanian nationalist militant and his spiritual master, the university professor A. Cuza, was one of the main nationalist politicians in the country, the chief of a nationalist organization called The League of National and Christian Defense.

With Codreanu as a charismatic leader, the Legion was known for skillful propaganda, including a very capable use of spectacle.
Codreanu was arrested and imprisoned in April 1938, and ultimately killed along with several other legionnaires by their Gendarmerie escort on the night of November 29-30, 1938, purportedly during an attempt to escape from prison.
It is generally agreed that there was no such escape attempt, and that Codreanu and the others were killed on the king's orders, probably in reaction to the November 24, 1938 murder by legionnaires of a relative (some sources say a "friend") of Armand Călinescu, then Minister of the Interior in the king's cabinet.

The fact that the president abstained from mentioning their names, however, placed a large question mark on the endeavor; some extremists (those belonging to the radical continuity stream allied at that time with the president's party), were obviously being treated differently than those extremists who belonged to the radical return stream.
In 1998, for example, in an interview with a daily published in Iasi, he called for a "short-term dictatorship" to overcome the "foolish and selfish" ambitions of political parties, which, he said, are corrupted or encourage corruption and fail to place the "national interest" at the head of their priority-list ("Romania libera," 6 April 1998).

In March 1930 Codreanu formed the "Iron Guard" (Garda de Fier) as a paramilitary political branch of the Legion; this name eventually came to refer to the Legion itself.
The main symbol used by the Iron Guard was a triple cross (a variant of the triple parted and fretted one), standing for prison bars (as a badge of martyrdom), and sometimes referred to as the "Archangel Michael Cross" (Crucea Arhanghelului Mihail).
Utilizing marches, religious processions, convenient "miracles," and patriotic and partisan hymns and anthems, along with volunteer work and charitable campaigns in rural areas in support of its anti-Communist, anti-Semitic, anti-liberal, and anti-parliamentary philosophy, the League presented itself as an alternative to corrupt, clientelist parties including the NCDL.

Üks on kindel — enesehinnanguga sel mehel probleeme polnud.
