Two days after the historic and tragic battle at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, fifty-three men of the Sixth Cavalry escorted a supply train to the regiment's camp at the site of the battle.
As the train prepared to cross the partially frozen White River on the route of their march, they were engaged by a force of 300 Indians.
With but four men, First Sergeant Cornelius Smith repelled the attack by a numerically superior enemy force, and continued to hold his position against repeated efforts by the Indian warriors to recapture it.
