		Hughes (1922-1999) was born in Marie, Arkansas, and attended high school at Williford, Arkansas.
		Hughes returned to St. James in 1959 to begin his career with the James Foun Upon her death, ownership of the land passed to the foundation together with buildings on the land and a $2.5 million cash endowment, which by the new millennium had grown to over $40 million.
		Hughes’ adopted home town of St. James was the fortunate recipient of his untiring advocacy, support and affection for the area.

		Hughes was given a small scare in Thursday's 90 km circuit race when he flatted with 1.5 km to go, but with the help of his teammates managed to ride the flat tire in to the finish for pack time.
		As the breakaway containing Kem was about to catch that of Cornelius, the breaks hit the main 25km climb of the day and were quickly swallowed up by the charging peloton.
		Hughes' lead was over 4 minutes at one point, and he charged the finish with everything he had.

		Cornelius said Gernhaelder stabbed Hughes three times, twice in the back and once in the neck, and clubbed him with thick tree branches.
		Cornelius asked the judge for to rule Gernhaelder ineligible for parole for 16 years.
