It was found that, in general, no more than a few minutes are required for a casual user to decide on the intended meaning of an ambiguous W in its most frequent contexts, thus resulting in the immediate disambiguation of thousands of occurrences of W in the text.
The method is also very useful in information retrieval contexts, where it gives the user an efficient tool for specifying, in a query with an ambiguous word, which of the word's contexts should be retrieved, thus greatly enhancing the precision of the retrieval.
Finally, it is expected that by gradually accumulating these disambiguation decisions in the appropriate word-entry of the available automatic dictionary of the language, "local expert systems" for many ambiguous words will develop, that can greatly facilitate ambiguity resolution in practical situations.

Contextual disambiguation is therefore impaired in tasks that assess executive functions and in tasks that assess non-executive functions.
Though we have focussed on coordinating interactions within the cortex, we assume that dynamic organization and contextual disambiguation are also relevant to the function of other brain regions such as the basal ganglia, the limbic system, thalamus and cerebellum.
In an early version of their theory these impairments were modelled as arising from reduced gain of units in a component of the model interpreted as being in the PFC (Cohen and Servan-Schreiber 1992).

 Vagueness
The direct bearers of vagueness are a word's full disambiguations such as ‘tall for an eighteenth century French man’.
The mere fact that an ambiguous statement comes out true under all its disambiguations does not show that the statement itself is true.
But the best that can be said of those that merely could be disambiguated is that they would have had a truth-value had they been disambiguated (Tye 1989).

Memory disambiguation is a very important issue for these purposes, for which we apply a combination of strategies:
The intermediate code representation and data structures are the key factors in the ability to quickly add optimizations and experiment with them.

We describe probabilistic word association models based on distributional word similarity, and apply them to two tasks, language modeling and pseudo-word disambiguation.
In the language modeling task, a similarity-based model is used to improve probability estimates for unseen bigrams in a back-off language model.
We also compare four similarity-based estimation methods against back-off and maximum-likelihood estimation methods on a pseudo-word sense disambiguation task in which we controlled for both unigram and bigram frequency to avoid giving too much weight to easy-to-disambiguate high-frequency configurations.

Knowledge Acquisition for Natural Language Understanding
To this end, we are extending a general knowledge acquisition framework, called Kenmore, that allows an NLP system to bootstrap its own knowledge bases directly from text using standard inductive machine learning techniques in conjunction with an annotated corpus and robust sentence analysis.
Kenmore has been used with corpora from two real-world domains to learn solutions to a number of problems in natural language processing including part-of-speech tagging, semantic feature tagging, case frame triggering, and relative pronoun disambiguation.
In current work, we are extending the framework to handle additional problems in lexical and structural ambiguity resolution and for use with very large text corpora.
