They released two albums, which were creative and experimental, beyond anything the current market had to offer.
Throughout the album the listener is taken on a surreal journey through Eastern Europe with cowbells and washboards as the main tour-guide.
This album sports a road map of the fruited plain on its' back cover art, which drives the listener on a musical journey across America.

Cornerstone (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cornerstone is the ninth album by Styx, released in 1979 (see 1979 in music).
Shaw's famous song on the album was the folkish sounding "Boat on the River" which became the band's biggest European hit.
Cornerstone became Styx's first US Top 5 album peaking at #2 on the Billboard album chart and is currently sitting at Double Platinum according to the R.I.A.A. although AandM said it went Triple Platinum(3 million copies sold in the US).

It was such a great album that I wondered if they could better it with their next release, but I am pleased to say that in my opinion they have - it doesn't get much better than this.
HS had some great standout tracks and was a damn good album, but I reckon this album is better in that it is a little bit more consistent.
Cornerstone's sound reminds me at times of Black Sabbath, Saxon, Deep Purple and other bands with that old school classic metal sound of the 70's and 80's, but they are by no means rip-off's of any of those bands.

Styx : Cornerstone - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Presenting radio with one of the best rock ballads ever, Cornerstone gave Chicago's Styx their big break with the number one single "Babe," which held that spot for two weeks in October of 1979.
While this single helped the album climb all the way to the number two spot on the charts, the rest of the tracks from Cornerstone weren't nearly half as strong.
The songs aren't as tight or assertive as their last few albums, but Shaw's presence can be felt strongly on most of the tracks, especially where the writing is concerned.

This album was a real surprise for me. I had never heard of Cornerstone until recently when a mate gave his "Human Stain" CD to me to check out.
Cornerstone was formed when Steen Morgsten (spelling?), bass player in Royal Hunt, decided to write his own material, and needed a band to perform it.
The influences are the same, but the sound is better, the band are tighter, there is a rockier edge to the proceedings, and best of all, the songs are outstanding; plus they've penned songs of multiple styles from ballads to moody mid-tempo to out-and-out rockers, all executed with aplomb.

Through their distributer in Denmark, whom I met while we were shipping the album around to different record companies in Europe, I must say I dident expect Massacre to release Arrival, they were more known as a metal label, but everybody makes mistakes sometimes.

It would be such a blast to tour the new album for 6 months but that is just not possible.

STYX Cornerstone review by daveconn(Dave Connolly)
Taken in toto, though, Cornerstone is mostly average arena pop, no better or worse than the post-pinnacle music of Kansas and Boston.
And the album did sell two million copies in the US, which speaks more to the band’s popularity than the merit of Cornerstone.
Cornerstone isn’t my cup of tea, or the Styx I’d stir my tea with, but then again the mere mention of arena rock usually makes my face scrunch up.

It is, however, an incredibly good album, and for the blamed--where they've come from musically to reach this point--something to be incredibly proud of.
The band has given us an album that exudes passion and honesty, packaged in a well-constructed and executed thirteen-track album.
There are a few minor flaws with songs seeming to run out of energy or simply not having it to begin with in certain areas, but they are minimal at worst and still have strong songwriting to carry them.

Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by Cornerstone called Once Upon Our Yesterdays
This is the third release from the brainchild of (now) ex-Royal Hunt bassist Steen Mogensen, and it continues in the style of the 2nd CD ‘Human Stain’.
If there is one thing (among many) that Cornerstone have done consistently well over their 3 albums, it is to produce ballads that are a cut above the usual Americanised lurve-rock songs.
In my view, the weakest track on the album, but would be more than a filler for most bands.

 Cornerstone
With the release of Styx's ninth album, Cornerstone, the band took a noticeable change in direction with their musical style.
The band, and especially Dennis, felt that it would be safest if Styx would try to alter their sound for this album because, at that time, the art-rock style seemed to have fallen by the wayside a bit, and it appeared that the wisest choice would be to try a more "poppy" sound.
The result was a fresh new sound, and the album had a considerably different style than its predecessors.
