  Tarquinia - Wikipedia

Tarquinia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tarquinia, formerly Corneto and in Antiquity Tarquinii, is an ancient city in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, Italy.
Tarquinii is said to have been already a flourishing city when Demaratus of Corinth brought in Greek workmen.
The flax and forests of its extensive territory are mentioned by classical authors, and we find Tarquinii offering to furnish Scipio with sailcloth in 195 B.C. A bishop of Tarquinii is mentioned in 456.

 Corneto
Corneto flourished in the XIIth and XIIIth centuries as an independent town and had close relationships with Pisa and Genoa, because at the time the river Marta was navigable and Corneto was an important trading post in the maritime route between northern and southern Italy.
Corneto still retains most of its medieval appearance because the development of the town was minimal after it was annexed to the Papal State in the XVth century.
The decline of Corneto under the papal government is evident in the few Baroque monuments which are mainly concentrated in the main square.

Currently in its seventh season, da Corneto has styled itself as "Chicago's concert opera company," presenting bel canto rarities (Donizetti's "La Favorita"), local premieres (Verdi's "I Lombardi") and repertory favorites (Verdi's "Aida").
From the excellent vocal soloists, to the sensitive conducting of Robert Ashens, to the vigorous orchestral performance, it's definitely the equal of many larger, more established and better funded regional opera companies (Michigan Opera Theatre comes to mind).
When da Corneto first staged "Lucrezia Borgia," back in its second season (1998), the opera had not been performed here in more than 100 years.
