  The Armory -- Page 2
The cornetto is a hybrid instrument with a small trumpet-like mouthpiece and fingerholes like a recorder; it is made in wood and covered in leather, although some surviving historical instruments are of ivory.
The cornetto was a virtuoso instrument as was the violin; it was accepted that any music suitable for violin could also be played on the cornetto.
The use of the cornetto survived longest in Northern Europe; J S Bach calls for it in some of his cantatas, but by this time it would have been considered rather old-fashioned, and by the end of the eighteenth century it had more or less died out.

The mute cornetto is a fascinating instrument that remains surprisingly in the background of historic performance, despite its very popular and widespread use in the Renaissance.
Corteccia was born in Florence in 1502, and was a cathedral organist and maestro di cappella.
The music for the cornetto from the sixteenth century, although much smaller in number than the music from the seventeenth century, is still extraordinary music, and any scholar of brass instruments, Renaissance music, or especially the cornetto would be well advised to study it.

The cornetto was popular throughout the renaissance in Europe, reaching a high point of popularity in the 17th century, when it was considered a virtuosic solo instrument.
Many earlier composers wrote pieces the cornetto would have been used for, but in the early and middle renaissance it was not standard for composers to indicate specific instruments in their scoring.

The Renaissance Cornetto   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The cornetto is a hybrid instrument with a small trumpet-like mouthpiece and fingerholes like a recorder; it is made in wood and covered in leather (usually - some surviving historical instruments are of ivory).
The difficulty of its technique meant that even at the height of its popularity there were relatively few really accomplished players, and the instrument went into decline during the second half of the seventeenth century as violin technique developed and as other wind instruments such as oboes became more sophisticated.
The combination of woodwind and brass techniques - normally quite different disciplines - and its general intractability make it a challenging instrument, but the result in the hands of a good player is something quite magical - a sound which, perhaps like no other instrument, conjures up the sound-world of a bygone age.
