The franchise was granted in 1969 as one of the innaugural teams of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
At this time, the team was located in Cornwall, Ontario and were known as the Cornwall Royals.

The Cornwall Civic Complex is a building constructed during the form-follows-function 1970's and is utilitarian without being beautiful; but it also has its charms.
The Royals left town for Newmarket and the arena became home to the AHL team the Cornwall Aces, the Quebec Nordiques farm team.
The team played at the Civic Complex for their entire OHL lives, but from 1969-76 the QMJHL Royals played out of the Water Street Arena (now the Si Miller Arena), which is across the street from the Civic Complex on Water Street and is a charming old arena that is well-worth checking out.

The Petes faced the Regina Pats and the Cornwall Royals in the 1979 Memorial Cup Tournament, the third straight time that Peterborough had played in the event.
The Cornwall Royals certainly didn't see it that way and they proved they belonged in the championship game all night, battling the Petes all the way to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation time.
Cornwall's title team, which would go on to win another Memorial Cup the next year, featured such future NHL stars as Dale Hawerchuk, Dan Daoust, Fred Boimistruck and current NHL coach Marc Crawford.

In his first year with the Royals, 1980-81, Gilmour was 5'9" and 150 pounds.
Cornwall repeated as Memorial Cup champions and Gilmour, who'd been passed over in his first year of draft eligibility, was selected by St. Louis in the seventh round, 134th overall.
He was returned to junior hockey by the Blues for the 1982-83 season and set the OHL on fire with 70 goals and 177 points capturing the Eddie Poweres Trophy as the OHL's leading scorer.

The 36th annual Cornwall Bantam will be held from Thursday February 4th to Sunday February 8th.
Their are six different divisions Major AAA, Minor AAA, Major AA, Minor AA, A and, B. The Cornwall Area will have teams in the Major and Minor AAA, which are the Seaway Valley Rapids, and A and B which will have the Royals in each of their respective divisions.
Cornwall did well in their divisions despite playing a level higher.

After Dale led the Cornwall Royals to their second consecutive Memorial Cup in 1981 and was named the Canadian Hockey League's most outstanding player, Winnipeg Jets general manager John Ferguson made him the No. 1 pick in the 1981 NHL draft.
I followed Hawerchuk's path from Cornwall to Winnipeg after being drafted by the Jets in the first round in 1982 and became Dale's teammate for the next seven years.
