The corona castrensis or corona vallaris was decorated with the upright sticks (valli) that surrounded a Roman camp or entrenchment and was given to the first soldier who forced his way into an enemy's palisade.
The corona sutilis was worn by the Salii at their festival and consisted of flowers sewn together rather than woven or twisted by the stems, perhaps to counteract the jumping motions of the celebrants.

 I. Embryology. 2. The Ovum. Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
The ovum is enclosed within a thick, transparent envelope, the zona striata or zona pellucida, adhering to the outer surface of which are several layers of cells, derived from those of the follicle and collectively constituting the corona radiata.
The cells of the corona radiata soon disappear; in some animals they secrete, or are replaced by, a layer of adhesive protein, which may assist in protecting and nourishing the ovum.
The phenomena attending the discharge of the ova from the follicles belong more to the ordinary functions of the ovary than to the general subject of embryology, and are therefore described with the anatomy of the ovaries.

The cells of the stratum granulosum that surround the developing ovum form a layer called the corona radiata.
The acellular material between the corona radiata and the ovum is the zona pellucida ("clear zone").
Some of these granulosa cells are formed into a golf-tee like structure termed the cumulus oophorus that supports the corona radiata and developing ovum.

PSH Webstore - Corona Radiata - Canadian Poetry and Poets
Corona Radiata is a meditation on the development of an embryo into a human being.
It is structured in nine sections, each corresponding to a different part of the developing fetus and to a different kind of journey.
In her latest book, Corona Radiata, Major offers clever poems about the origins of gender, the ritual burial of the placenta, how soul and body are linked, the human ability to feel emotion, embryology — both ancient and modern, and theology.

A spiculated margin with multiple fine strands extending into the lung is produced by desmoplastic contraction of the connective tissue planes of the surrounding lung.
The "Corona Radiata" and "Notch Sign" are most frequently seen in malignant lesions.
There is so much overlap in the appearance of the margins of benign and malignant lesions that this feature is often useless in the differential diagnosis.

Although they are not represented very clearly here, the ovum is surrounded by non-cellular zona pellucida and the corona radiata, which is a remnant of the granulosa cells that surrounded it in the follicle.
The fertilizing sperm passes through the corona, penetrates the zona and lands tangentially on the surface of the ovum.
First, examine the image of the ovum, surrounded by the corona radiata.

When spermatozoa are bathed in secretions of the female genital tract (or washed in an appropriate media) they become capacitated and capable of penetrating the outer investments of the ovum.
Spermatozoa must pervade the corona radiata and the zona pellucida before reaching the ovum proper; they do so by releasing hydrolytic enzymes from the acrosome - the corona-penetrating enzyme (hyaluronidase) and acrosin (a trypsin-like protease which digests the zona pellucida).
The acrosomal reaction is initiated when spermatozoa come in contact with the corona radiata or zona pellucida.
