Identification of Spectral Lines - History of Coronium
Coronium appears relatively abundant in those regions of the sun's limb from which the great extensions of the corona flow.
He claimed that all of the strongest lines attributed to coronium in the visible spectrum could be connected with the terms of O I. He thought that the Zeeman effect of 6374 might give the nature of the new terms and that possibly the sp4 configuration played an important part.
He definitely concluded that the mysterious coronium turns out to be O I. Ferichs (1932) and Dingle (1932) immediately challenged such a statement on the grounds that the correlation was merely accidental and Dingle pointed out that the R-term was based on the assumption that requires verification of existence and therefore the problem remains unsolved.

Dmitri Mendeleev - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1902, in an attempt at a chemical conception of the Aether, he put forward a hypothesis that there existed two inert chemical elements of lesser atomic weight than hydrogen.
Of these two proposed elements, he thought the lighter to be an all-penetrating, all-pervasive gas, and the slightly heavier one to be a proposed element, coronium.
Mendeleev devoted much study, and made important contributions to, the determination of the nature of such indefinite compounds as solutions.

NASA - Sun-Earth Day - Technology Through Time
The green color of the solar corona seen during a total solar eclipse was once thought to be cause by the element coronium.
It wasn’t until 60 years later that Swedish astronomer Bengt Edlin(1906-1993)finally determined that the Coronium lines were caused by the element iron seen under very high temperatures.
Discovering the source of the Coronium line only opened up another perplexing question that astronomers were not able to answer until the start of the 21st Century.

Science News Online - Timeline - This Week - 4/4/98
Coronium, the mysterious substance in the sun’s corona that only manifests itself in spectrum photographs made at the time of a total solar eclipse, is probably due to argon, third most abundant gas in the air.
"Coronium" was first found in 1869 when, in the eclipse of that year, astronomers noticed a strange line of green color in the spectrum of the corona.
This is the extremely rarefied outer layer of the sun that is visible only when the central disk of the sun is obscured by the moon.

This was shown later by Ramsey (in 1900) to come from an element then unknown on Earth and therefore given the name Helium - now measured as the second most abundant element in the Universe.
It was only much later, after the development of quantum mechanics and the measurement of spark discharge spectra by Bowen Edlen (1939), that the physicist Grotrian was able to solve the mystery of the coronium.
Grotrian showed that these mysterious transitions in fact show iron in a very high state of ionisation due to the extreme temperature (iron having lost 9 electrons for the red coronal line and 13 electrons for the green coronal line) of the corona.

The element 'helium' was discovered in the solar spectrum before it was finally found on earth, however the remaining mysterious lines turned out not to be from exotic new elements, but from ordinary iron atoms.
The coronium lines were found in the coronal regions of the sun high above the solar surface.
Instead, the emission lines attributed to coronium were found to come from iron atoms that had been stripped of 13 of their electrons!

 Emission and absorption lines
This is complicated by the fact that some lines are observable only under extreme circumstances and one has to take them into consideration as well.
For example, after the success of the discovery of Helium, another set of lines (not so prominent) was isolated and associated with yet another element, ``coronium''.
It was later shown that the coronium lines were in fact iron lines, which are clearly observable only in the extreme conditions present in the sun (one can also see them in the laboratory, it's just hard to do so).

For many years it was known that the light from the corona showed bright emission lines in the green and red, but no one could identify the wavelengths with any known elements.
There were suggestions that it might be ``coronium'', an element that existed only in the corona of the Sun.
In 1939 they were identified with iron atoms which had been ionized between 9 and 14 times.

However, despite an enormous amount of work, both at the telescope during subsequent eclipses and in the laboratory, this emission line could not be attributed to any known chemical element.
As the years passed, the mystery of the origin of this emission line deepened and some astronomers went as far as introducing an entirely new element named 'coronium'.
It was only after 70 years that the coronium mystery was finally solved by two astrophysicists, Walter Grotrian from Germany and Bengt Edlén from Sweden.
