In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body. Page 1248
The corpora cavernosa penis are surrounded by a strong fibrous envelope consisting of superficial and deep fibers.
The glans and anterior part of the corpus cavernosum urethræ are detached from the corpora cavernosa penis and turned to one side.
The portion of the corpus cavernosum urethræ in front of the bulb lies in a groove on the under surface of the conjoined corpora cavernosa penis.

The penis (plural penises or penes) or phallus is the male copulatory organ, and, in mammals, the male organ of urinary excretion.
The human penis differs from some other mammalian penises by lacking an erectile bone, instead relying entirely on engorgement with blood to reach its erect state, lacking the ability to be withdrawn into the groin, and being larger than average in proportion to body mass.
From polling, the average human male penis is 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) in length when fully engorged with blood during arousal, though this varies quite a bit.

 Penis Anatomy
The body of the penis, sometimes referred to as the shaft, is cylindrical in shape when flaccid but when erect is somewhat triangular in cross section, with the angles rounded.
The base of the glans has a projecting margin, the corona, and the groove where the corona overhangs the corpora cavernosa is referred to as the neck of the penis.
The corpora cavernosa are termed erectile tissue, because during sexual excitation, their fibrous tissue is expanded by blood that flows into and fills their empty spaces.

glan´dis pe´nis [TA] corona of glans penis: the rounded proximal border of the glans penis, separated from the corpora cavernosa penis by the neck of the glans.
pe´nis [TA] corpus of penis: the free part of the penis from the root to the glans, consisting chiefly of the paired corpora cavernosa penis and the single corpus spongiosum penis; called also body or shaft of penis.
spongio´sum pe´nis [TA] spongy body of penis: the column of erectile tissue that forms the urethral surface of the penis, and in which the urethra is found; its distal expansion forms the glans penis.

 Glans penis
The glans penis is the expanded cap of the corpus spongiosum.
It is moulded on the rounded ends of the corpora cavernosa penis, extending farther on their upper than on their lower surfaces.
Contrary to widely-held belief, the glans of the circumcised penis does not develop a thicker keratinisation layer.[6] Studies have shown that the glans is equally sensitive in circumcised and uncircumcised males,[7] [8] however, many males who have restored their foreskin disagree with these findings.

 The Male Reproductive System
The penis is traversed by a tube, the urethra, which serves as a passage both for urine and for semen.
The slender corpus spongiosum reaches beyond the extremities of the erectile corpora cavernosa, and at its outer end is enlarged considerably to form a soft, conical, sensitive structure called the glans penis.
A deep fascia, or sheet of connective tissue, surrounding the structures in the body of the penis, is prolonged to form the suspensory ligament, which anchors the penis to the pelvic bones at the mid point of the pubic arch.

 Male Reproductive 7 Penis
In general, the body of the penis consists of the urethra, erectile tissue (corpora cavernosa penis and corpora cavernosum urethra), smooth and skeletal muscle, touch and pressure receptors (Pacinian corpuscles) and a dense connective tissue capsule (tunica albuginea).
During erection, these vessels and the sinuses become engorged with blood, and the thin-walled veins beneath the tunica albuginea are effectively closed, further increasing the rigidity of the organ.
Because the capsule around the erectile tissue of the corpus cavernosum urethra is not as thick as that around the corpus cavernosum penis, the urethra is not occluded during erection.

The corpora may be decompressed by introduction of large-bore needles (12- or 16-gauge) with evacuation and irrigation, although tumescence usually recurs.
Semipermanent diversion by means of a saphenous vein shunt from one or both corpora or a cavernosa-spongiosum shunt may result in detumescence of sufficient duration to permit reestablishment of pelvic circulation.

The penis is comprised of three parallel expandable cylinders, or corpora.
The two corpora cavernosa make up the top part of the shaft, while the corpora spongiosum is positioned in the groove between and beneath them, wrapping around the urethra and forming the head of the penis.
One reason for this can be that one of the corpora cavernosa is shorter than the other; this causes an erection to point in the direction of the shorter corpora.

To understand this, you need to know that the penis is made of two corpora cavernosa and a corpus spongiosum.
The corpora cavernosa are made of trabicular tissues and lacunar spaces.
When this happens, it is mainly caused by the fact that one of the corpora cavernosa does not expend as much as the other.

eMedicine - Priapism : Article Excerpt by: Colin M Dougherty, MD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-30)
Background: Priapism is the presence of a persistent, usually painful, erection of the penis unrelated to sexual stimulation or desire.
Pathophysiology: Priapism is the result of persistent engorgement of the corpora cavernosa of the penis, originating from a disturbance in the mechanisms that control normal penile detumescence.
Prolonged veno-occlusive priapism results in fibrosis of the penis and a loss of the ability to achieve an erection.

Maybe I "wear" my penis differently than most, my penis hangs down all the time (covering testicles), I'm thinking that when an erection occurs the penis is limited to the tightness of jeans or underwear and therefore has never had the room to be straight.
Surgery can straighten the penis but you may have to sacrifice a centimeter or so of length depending on the amount of curvature.
