  Boston Ballet : Ballet Glossary
In traditional ballets like Swan Lake the corps de ballet dances in large group formations, often moving and turning in intricate lines and patterns.
It is the difficult task of the corps de ballet to move with a sense of unison: striving for harmony in line and timing.
Traditionally, the beginning of ballet class is done at the barre and this portion of class is called "barre work." Young pupils learn each new ballet movement facing the barre and holding onto it with two hands.

A ballet based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about a pair of shoes that dance on and on regardless of the wishes of the wearer was the subject of a famous movie that was produced in 1948 and that even to this day influences the dance world.
As it draws to its close, we see the whole Corps de Ballet on stage, now after the lead ballerina has rejected the red shoes, removed them and thrown them down in a gesture of good riddance, only to see the balletmaster unhesitatingly pass them on to her understudy.
They are oblivious to the ballet happening upstage until they have crossed all the way to stage left in carefree conversation, the red shoes, now a thing of the past.

The corps de ballet is to a dance troupe as the spine is to the body: It provides framework, support, context, and aesthetic form.
Frances Perez-Ball, who joined the Houston Ballet's corps after dancing with Boston Ballet for eight years, thinks that dancing in a group requires a conscientiousness that's different than dancing solo roles, which she has often been called to perform.
And because full-length ballets are stocked with multiple characters, and choreographers pick and choose casts, dancers are often yanked from the corps into the soloist spotlight.
