I was fortunate that a large majority of my friends were interested in music and marching, so a group of about 10 of us all joined our local fire departments drum and bugle corps - which was understaffed and trying hard to expand and gain local support as a parade unit.
Even though my favorite drum corps as a kid were the Hawthorne Caballeros and the NY Skyliners (see links at the bottom), location sent me to the Long Island Sunrisers when I was of age.
