Corpse paint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Corpse paint (sometimes a single word, corpsepaint) is a style of fl-and-white makeup used extensively by fl metal bands during live concerts and photo shoots.
The decoration is used to intensify the bands' imagery of forbidding evil, inhumanity, and corpse-like decay (thus the term corpse paint).
Early Norwegian fl metal bands such as Mayhem, Emperor, Immortal, Darkthrone, and Satyricon are arguably responsible for maintaining the popularity of the corpsepaint among today's fl metal acts.

Black Metal FAQ   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Corpsepaint first originated in simple costuming tradition, and was even used by some hardrock stars like Alice Cooper during the 1970s.
Early second wave fl metallers based their corpsepaint on several sources, mainly, on the victims (corpses) of the bubonic plague, who had pasty skin and fl spots around their eyes and mouth, but also on the traditional concept of “war paint” as it was practiced by warriors during the dark ages.
Corpsepaint has been so prolific and watered down in recent years that the practice now carries a tinge of embarrassment, which discourages more serious artists from using it to enhance their art.

But by no means should the usage of corpsepaint be forged into a rule defining fl metal for what it is. BM is so much more than simply props.
The whole point of corpsepaint was to instill terror in individuals watching them and a rather subtle means of animalistic subconscious intimidation.
Corpsepaint just happened to be the cheapest method early BM bands could find to transform themselves physically into something else that would enable a mental image to set into the minds of their audience.

FOG: Well, I honestly cannot say that we are the first American BM group that has chosen not to wear corpsepaint.
I don't wish to create some fraudulent alter ego as a performing musician in order to illicit some traditional response from people that choose to listen to what I create, or participate in creatively, and that is what I feel wearing corpsepaint amounts to.
That would also mean having a clear knowledge of occult practice or an established self-styled practice that uses corpsepaint effectively.

It is pleasing to see that, even after ten years, Immortal haven't stopped appearing live, and on album covers, in corpsepaint.
Immortal today are a punishingly powerful three-piece who've mixed a fl metal mainline -- their central musical blood-vein -- with more established rock songwriting styles.
The corpsepaint is part of Immortal the way the make-up was part of KISS or the biking leathers were part of 'Priest: a defining part of them.

Imagine, if you will, American Metalcore masters Converge in a secluded forest in Germany, dressed to kill in corpsepaint with swords and torches - that is Caliban.
Highly influenced by the likes of worldwide favorites Converge and Disembodied, Caliban seem to find solace in blending the more memorable moments of Bolt Thrower, earlier Dimmu Borgir (especially in the vocal dept.) and earlier In Flames to create their patented Euro Black Metal forge of Hardcore.

In Black metal do you feel that the image, (corpsepaint, spikes etc...) is essential to the BM package, or is image just something that comes with playing BM and being involved in it?
Yes I think the corpsepaint and spikes, blood and fire are all important elements that go with the music.
All these things create a visual and visual is an important factor in creating an atmosphere and energy.

And the irony in this is the fact that Darkthrone developed these future cliches (i.e., wearing corpsepaint, dressing in all fl clothing, posing for pictures during the night, etc.), in order to shock people and spread fear.
Eventually the scene went from frightening to laughable, and with the exception of a few bands, became rather watered-down.
