The story of Ted Williams' death took a turn for the weird when it was revealed that the Splendid Splinter may now be a corpsicle.
And however unlikely it seems that the few dozen corpsicles over at Alcor will ever be resurrected, I think it's overwhelmingly likely that, before too many decades or centuries go by, technologies will have emerged that allow people born then to live a good, long time.
Which means that, of the thousands of generations of human beings who have lived and died, we're among the last handful of generations with these ridiculous firefly life spans.

Halperin is a great reseacher, and he provides believable science to justify the societal changes he predicts.
If you are interested in cryonics (freezing of heads or bodies in hopes that future science will discover ways to revive the “corpsicle”) or nanotechnology, you will find this book challenging, rewarding, and significant.
I can’t say this was a fabulous story, in terms of its appeal strictly as a work of fiction, but I believe it will stay with me longer than most of the stuff I read.

In effect, Ted Williams and others like him are Schrödinger corpsicles: existing in a kind of superposition of life and death until an attempt is made to revive them and either succeeds or fails.
(Larry Niven, who is generally credited with coining the word "corpsicle," although he says he borrowed it, most likely from Frederick Pohl, famously "predicted" in his future history that political pressure from an aging population would lead to corpsicles being harvested as organ donors.)
So in reality, whether or not one believes in the existence of a soul as defined and delimited by Mark matters not at all to the cryonics debate.

I found this to be a rather curious state of affairs, and I am sure there are many good reasons for virtually everyone electing the ashes to ashes, or back to the earth routes, instead of becoming a corpsicle.
This is a curiosity driven survey designed to investigate the main reasons why funeral homes get almost all of the meat of the death business, while cryonics companies are picking over the bones, as it were.
