Their bravery was fortified by the knowledge that the corpsman, the Sailors of solace, were literally at their sides with the skill and means to staunch wounds, ally pain and to carry them back, if need be, to safe shelter and the ministrations of the finest medical talent in the world.
You corpsman performed fox-hole surgery while shell fragments clipped your clothing, shattered the plasma bottles from which you poured new life into the wounded, and sniper's bullets were aimed at the brassards on your arms.

 The WWII Navy Corpsman
Schools at Camp Pendleton in California and Camp LeJeune in North Carolina were established to train Corpsman in the principles of field medicine.
During the Vietnam conflict between 1963 and 1975, Corpsman were called to serve their country in Southeast Asia.
During this 12-year conflict, 628 Corpsman were killed in action and another 3,353 were wounded in action.

 Corpsman Up!
Hospital Corpsman 2nd class Rick Crabtree was our "doc", he had been with the platoon for about 4 months and was a good friend to all and a hell of a corpsman.
In this case my mind kept telling me if I yelled corpsman up, that Rick would not come, since he was on the top of the hill and I was down the side of the hill.
Now field corpsman have never been known for their bedside manner and Rick was no different, his comment of "Aw, shit Rod", kind of led credence to my personal feeling.

On 15 July 1966, Petty Officer Dennis was assigned as a Medic onboard a Marine CH-46 helicopter, which was one of ten aircraft assigned to transport 120 Marines into the DMZ in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam in support of other Marines that were trapped in the area.
Hospital Corpsman Dennis was onboard the second helicopter as they approached the landing zone when it was hit by a heavy barrage of enemy ground fire.
The family of Navy corpsman Mark V. Dennis were told that he had been killed in a helicopter crash in 1966.

As a Fleet Marine Corpsman, Hospitalman Gene Twehous saved others' lives and had already been wounded (earning him the Purple Heart Medal) before he rejoined his platoon and went back into the bush.
In 1967, while accompanying his platoon across a stream swept by heavy enemy sniper fire, Hospitalman Gene Twehous was fatally wounded after ensuring that all his comrades had made the crossing safely.
