The railway opened as the horse-worked Corris, Machynlleth and River Dovey Tramroad in 1859, connecting the slate quarries in the district around Corris,Corris Uchaf and Aberllefenni with wharves on the estuary of the Afon Dyfi at Derwenlas and Morben, south-west of Machynlleth.
The principal reason for the existence of the Corris Railway was to serve the slate quarries of this district.
The society is also actively pursuing a southwards extension towards Machynlleth, with the initial aim of extending the line to Tan-y-Coed, midway between Esgairgeiliog and Llwyngwern and some two and a half miles south of Corris.

The Corris Railway was a narrow gauge (686mm, 2'3") railway line[?] running along the Dulas Valley, in Mid-Wales.

The Talyllyn Railway (Welsh: Rheilffordd Talyllyn) is a 2 ft 3 in (686 mm) narrow gauge preserved railway line running for 7ΒΌ miles (11.67km) from Tywyn on the Mid-Wales coast to Nant Gwernol.
The original two engines were purchased from Fletcher, Jennings and Co. of Whitehaven in Cumbria, and both are still in service, 140 years on, but so many of their parts have been replaced down the years that much of their present-day component metal is not original.
The Talyllyn Railway is represented in The Railway Series by Rev.

Built, like many of the narrow-gauge railways in North Wales, to serve the slate industry, the Corris Railway is unusual in that it is of the comparatively rare 2ft 3in gauge (see also the Talyllyn Railway).
The Corris Society was formed in 1966 and reached its first landmark in 1970 when the Corris Railway Museum was opened in the former railway stable.
The railway's new-build steam loco No 7 was delivered to the line on May 17 and is expected to be passed to enter service during the course of the 2005 season.

Corris railway supplied a passenger service from 1883, but in 1930 it was closed to the public and used as a route for slate.

The line was sanctioned in 1858 to carry slate from the quarries at Corris and Aberllefenni, along the valley of the Afon Dulas, to the town of Machynlleth.
One of the unusual aspects of the Corris Railway was it's involvement in road transport.
In 1966 the Corris Railway Preservation Society was formed by some members of the equivalent Talyllyn organisation, to preserve what was left with a view to restoration at some time in the future.

The railway has agreed to loan locomotive No. 3 "Sir Haydn" to the Corris Railway Society in October 1998, subject to agreement on the fee and meeting track, safety and security conditions.
The original request for a loan in August 1998 (to mark the 40th anniversary of the Corris line) had to be declined as the loco is required in traffic at Tywyn during this period.
Mike first visited the Talyllyn Railway in 1957, became a member of the society in 1964 and started as a volunteer in the locomotive department in 1968, progressing through the grades to become a fireman in 1981.

The quarry has its own 2ft 3in gauge railway which brings the slate up to the surface, not to be confused with the Corris Railway, see below.
The Corris, Machynlleth and River Dovey Tramroad was opened in 1859, using horsedrawn vehicles, and employing almost 13 miles of 2ft 3in gauge track.
The original Dyfi railway bridge, of trestle construction, was replaced by a steel girder bridge in 1906.
