Because iron is a component of hemoglobin, a red oxygen-carrying pigment of the red blood cells of vertebrates, iron compounds are important in nutrition; one cause of anemia is iron deficiency.
Iron is the fourth most abundant element in the earth's crust, of which it constitutes about 5% by weight, and is believed to be the major component of the earth's core.
Iron is found distributed in the soil in low concentrations and is found dissolved in groundwaters and the ocean to a limited extent.

Te Papa - Tai Awatea / Knowledge Net - Corrugated iron
Corrugated iron roofs were also found to be efficient at collecting rainwater: the water would run down the grooves into large corrugated iron tanks, a method of water collection that is still used in remote areas of New Zealand today.
Even though considered by some to be a 'poor man's' roofing material, corrugated iron's strength, durability, and the fact that it is waterproof and fireproof, have ensured its continued popularity as a building material.
Corrugated iron also evokes nostalgic memories in many New Zealanders, not just the sight of it, but also the sounds associated with it, such as the sound of rain on a corrugated iron roof, or the sound kids make by running a stick, or a finger, along a corrugated iron fence.

Iron and steel - Corrugated iron - Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand
Corrugated iron was widely used in rural areas as a general-purpose building material.
Because the sheets of iron had to be purchased and then transported to the farm, they were often re-used once a temporary building was abandoned.
From the early 20th century onwards corrugated iron was mainly used as a roofing material, traditionally painted red or green.

This roadworthy corrugated iron vehicle embodies the widespread (but seldom explored) notion of the car not only as mode of transport and statement of identity but as shelter.
As an artist, he isn't all that interested in summoning ghosts from his corrugated metal, of exploring its Gothic potential as Australian artist Victor Meertens certainly did in his tortured corrugated iron sculptures of the late 1980s (structures that evoked devastated buildings and the frameworks of crashed World War Two bombers).
While the agents of a state-sanctioned national identity might easily and enthusiastically accommodate the corrugated iron letter-boxes, moas and Thomson's version of the inter-island ferry Arahura, they would, I suspect, stare blankly at the Brancusi-esque columns, penguins and rhinoceroses which are just as integral a part of Jeff Thomson's encyclopedic referencing of the world.
