The Ling-Temco-Vought A-7 Corsair II was a light attack aircraft based on the F-8 Crusader.
USAF Corsair IIs were phased out of front-line service by the late 1970s, after a trial against the slow but rugged A-10 Thunderbolt in the close air support role.
The last US Corsairs were retired not long after some surplus aircraft were then passed to Greece and Portugal, where they remain in service.

Union City, GA After a long time away from Corsairs (VA-22 line division 1988-89), I had an opportunity to visit the USS Midway museum last December.
The staff was very understanding when I asked if I could go inside the cordon and crawl around underneath the A-7 on the flight deck.
I enjoyed the tours with the Corsairs, as an AE teh electrical system was a bit more complex with the Es but once you got em dialed in, they were on time and on target and a darn good gas station as long as the mechs stayed out out of the buddy store electrics!!!

The A-7D differed from the Navy's Corsair II in several ways.
For one, the Air Force insisted on significantly more power for its Corsair II version, and they selected the Allison TF41-A-1 turbofan engine, which was a license-built version of the Rolls-Royce Spey.
During the early 1980s, most A-7Ds were replaced by A-10 Thunderbolt IIs in USAF front-line service, but it remained in the Air National Guard squadrons for a while longer, equipping an eventual total of 14 ANG squadrons.
